Short Bio:

Cathryn Amidei received her MFA from Eastern Michigan University in Textiles.
She also has a bachelor of art in Anthropology. She has worked in the apparel and textile industry in a number of capacities for over 20 years. She has designed costumes for theatre, and dance as well as custom designed garments for clients and sewed for successful designers as well.
            Her interests, creative and research activities include innovative textile and garment design in novel and materials and constructions and especially utilizing innovative technological solutions. She developed  the weaving studio and also developed courses to teach software applications in digital design. Cathryn has developed several courses that utilize and focus on collaboration, multidisciplinary approaches and experiential learning.

 


Areas of Expertise:

She has extensive training and expertise in Jacquard woven fabrics, and has exhibited her woven artwork both nationally and internationally. She has taught and trained students in jacquard weaving at both Eastern and at the Jacquard Center in North Carolina. She works closely with the inventor of the TC-1, a Jacquard loom that is located in the Fiber program at Eastern and has and will teach courses related to jacquard textiles and design.
Cathryn develops and produces the ATM Runway Show. This innovative course is designed to facilitate collaborative efforts across programs and colleges to produce this popular and well regarded event.

Cathryn is also the founder of the Y Collective - an experimental design incubator located in the ATM program. The Collective consists of both current students and alumni. Their work has been exhibited in the annual runway show, national juried art competitions and internationally as well.


She is the sponsor of the Student Organization- Fashion Avenue.
She also leads the ATM Study abroad program. This course visits London and Paris, and Italy (Rome and Florence). And..she also takes students to New York, and Chicago  to visit Fashion Markets and annual student conventions.
