Annual Fashion Show - - Each spring, the Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising department produces the annual fashion show. The show is developed and produced by students. The show features a myriad of design concepts created by the design students within the department as well as local designers and invited EMU students.
Annual Market Trip- - At the close of the winter semester, the students are offered the opportunity to tour a major fashion market. They receive access to fashion industry professionals and gain entrance into venues not open to the public. In previous years, students traveled to New York where they toured designer workrooms, showrooms, magazine headquarters, and manufacturers. They also strolled the fashion district; visited museums and attended Broadway shows. The program began alternating between the New York and L.A. markets in 2009. The program recently added study abroad opportunities during the spring break. The students toured London and Paris in 2010 and visited Rome and Florence in 2011.
Annual Career Day- Each Fall, students travel together by train to attend the annual Careers in Fashion career expo at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The event is hosted by the Fashion Group International (FGI.org). The two day trip gives students the opportunity to gain insight into the fast paced, competitive fashion industry. The event includes seminars that focus on various areas of the fashion industry, a job fair, a keynote speaker and a student fashion show with an award ceremony. Each year the trip proves worthwhile with top companies such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Parisians recruiting during the event. Students are allowed to tailor their experience by choosing three out of about 20 seminars, with topics ranging from design and fashion show production to entrepreneurship.
Arden Design Competition -
In the fall of 2010, several students enrolled in the Manufacturing Techniques course elected to participate in the Arden Design Competition. Arden Companies is a manufacturer of outdoor cushions and umbrellas as well as foodservice products. The students, accompanied by two program instructors visited the company headquarters and presented their designs to the product development team. The winning design by Ayesha Waris will be utilized in an up-coming line of oven mitts.
