Admission Requirements and Procedures
Two Annual Admission Deadlines:
- February 15th for a Fall (September) start
- October 15th for a Winter (January) start
All of the following six items must be received by the Admissions Office of Eastern Michigan University by the above dates in order to be considered for the program.
- Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, and English proficiency if needed (University requirement)
- Official Transcripts for all bachelor's and master's degrees
- Resume that is current with work and educational details
- Personal Statement of why the doctoral degree is desired
- Three Recommendations from persons who know your abilities
- Graduate Application Form completed online
1. Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
Academic ability as measured by verbal, quantitative, and written scores on the GRE exam (See details at www.ets.org/gre). A minimum combined score of 1000 on the General Test (verbal and quantitative sections) is preferred, plus a minimum score of 4 out of 6 on the written test. If exam scores are older than three (3) years, the exam should be taken again.
For international students, evidence of English language proficiency is required as demonstrated by official test scores on the TOEFL (550 traditional, 213 computer), TWE (4), or MELAB (80). (See details online at: www.emich.edu/admissions/grad/international_students/; then select "Information Checklist for International Applicants.") Students who have completed a graduate degree in the United States need not meet this requirement
2. Official Transcripts
Submit proof of academic achievement as evidenced in transcripts of prior completed degree with a graduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale. For lower GPAs, conditional admission maybe possible following Graduate School guidelines.
Official Transcripts of all bachelor's and master's degrees should be sent directly to the Eastern Michigan University Office of Admissions from each institution attended after high school. However, they may be submitted in an official sealed envelope and sent to the Office of Admissions, Eastern Michigan University, 401 Pierce Hall, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. Call 734.487.3400 if you have questions.
3. Resume
Submit a current, up-to-date resume showing current and past work experiences.
4. Personal Statement (300 words)
Explain your academic and professional background, and your desire for further education as it relates to your overall career goals and objectives. How does your background match or "fit" with one of the current concentrations offered in the doctoral program? (For a current list of concentration options, see the online program home page at: www.emich.edu/cot/progsites/phd.) A good fit between each doctoral student and faculty expertise and research background is a strong consideration. When reviewing applications, there is an advantage for those who have an EMU master's degree, or a degree in a discipline similar to the graduate degrees offered in the College of Technology.
Include a paragraph that describes two or three possible research topics you might want to investigate for your dissertation; why are these topics of interest to you? If you know of a specific professor at Eastern Michigan University who has interest or experience in these topics, please note this also.
5. Three Recommendations
Request three (3) recommendations to be submitted by professors, instructors, and/or work supervisors who can assess your ability to successfully complete the research and academic requirements of a doctoral program. Personal qualities that we seek include your ability to focus on tasks, complete what you start, and your thoughtfulness and attention to detail.
