Frequently asked questions about the PhD in Technology program at EMU


When and where are the doctoral classes held? Classes are often held in Sill Hall on weekday evenings from 5:30 pm to 9 pm. There are a few Saturday and hybrid classes available.

Can this program be completed online? No.

Can I transfer classes from another university or another program at EMU? You may be able to transfer up to 12 credits of previously completed graduate coursework into the program. You will need to discuss this on an individual basis with the your faculty advisor.

How many credit hours should I take to be a "full time" student? To be considered a "full time" student, you must take 8 credit hours per Fall and Winter semester.

Are there graduate assistantships and fellowships available? Yes. We offer Graduate Assistantships and a few Doctoral Fellowships. See the tab above for details under "Financial Aid."

When I take the GRE/TOEFL, I need the institution number for Eastern Michigan University. What is it? The number for Eastern Michigan University is #1201 for both the GRE and the TOEFL

Are admissions to the program conducted Fall and Winter semesters or just annually? We accept applications both semesters; February 15th for Fall admission, October 15th for Winter admission. For details, see the tab above called "Admission."

What code do I use on the EMU application for the PhD program? The code for the PhD program is TECH/PHD-TC

How do I get an academic advisor? Faculty members will serve as advisors/mentors to students, training and guiding them in developing their own research plans for their dissertation. Students may request a specific faculty as an advisor, and may request a change in advisor as they matriculate through the program. Every effort will be made to accommodate student requests within reason.
