About Dr. Chapman
Bob Chapman received a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from Yale University. Following post-doctoral studies, he was a research chemist at DuPont where he developed new materials for x-ray films.

Chapman then worked as the principal scientist for Photo Systems in Dexter, Michigan. During that time, he developed over one dozen new photographic process proprietary chemical products, primarily for the home darkroom and newspaper markets.

His next position was principal process engineer for Kaiser Optical Systems in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His duties included the development of sensitized holographic film-coatings and wet chemistry processes. It was during this period—in the early 1980s—that his interests shifted towards the application of quality disciplines to product and process improvement.

Dr. Chapman teaches full time in the MS degree Quality program at Eastern Michigan University. His teaching duties include courses in advanced SPC, designed experiments (DOE), reliability engineering and multivariate data analysis.

Dr. Chapman has consulted in the Quality field since 1987. The primary emphasis is to help organizations with product/process improvement using SPC, designed experiments, reliability studies and data mining. Chapman has been a contributing editor of Photo Techniques since 1981. He has also published in Macromolecules, Biopolymers, and Quality Engineering.

About Dr. Dan Fields
Dr. Fields is the Director of EMU's Center for Product Research and Development. He has been with EMU since 1986. He is a tenured Full Professor in the School of Engineering Technology and has worked in various capacities within the department. He led the development and implementation of the Master's degree in Quality during his early years at EMU. From its approval in 1991 to 1995 he was instrumental in making the program accessable to a wide variety of locations. Current Quality faculty have followed through with this effort and the program is now available world-wide through web delivery. Dr. Fields was appointed the Industrial Technology Department Head in 1995 through 2001; a period of rapid program expansion, including the launch of the first Engineering Technology programs at EMU. Desiring to return to a stronger research agenda, he returned to faculty in 2001. Based on his success at attracting research grants from industrial sponsors, he developed the Center for Product R & D, which provides assistance to companies and inventors in the development of ideas into products. The CPRD filed its first patent application in March 2004, with Dr. Fields being the Inventor. The patent was issued in October 2008.

Prior to joining EMU, Dr. Fields was employed by CWC Castings Division of Textron for a total of 13 years. At Textron he held a variety of positions, including Quality Engineer, Pattern Superintendent, Inspection Superintendent, Quality Manager and Director of Training and Development. He was an Army officer; serving on active duty in the Military Police in the 101st Airborne Division, and as the Executive Officer for an Army Reserve Engineering Company, and an Infantry Company Commander in the Michigan National Guard.

His educational background includes an Associate Degree from Muskegon Community College, a Bachelors Degree with teaching certification (Science) and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Adult and Continuing Education (Industrial Training) with a cognate in Quality. His Ph.D. Dissertation is: "A Study of Work Environment Factors Associated with the Transfer of Statistical Process Control Training to Shop-Floor Applications." conducted at Ford Motor Company.

About Dr. Tucker
Walter Tucker, Ph.D., holds the rank of full professor in the School of Engineering Technology at Eastern Michigan University. He has earned degrees at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Michigan. His primary area of expertise is quality systems with a specific research interest in work organization. Dr. Tucker is an active consultant to industrial firms and the government in the U.S. and Latin America. His publications include some twenty papers, book chapters, and presentations. Recent research includes extending the lean paradigm into business processes, and improving productivity in commercial construction.
Dr. Tucker teaches QUAL 552 Quality Planning, QUAL 546 Total Quality Management, QUAL 556 Human Aspects of Continuous Improvement, and QUAL 558 Lean Production. Commensurate with the philosophy of Professor Kaoru Ishikawa, Dr. Tucker believes that the way to a better future is by maximizing the value stream through best-practice quality systems. That is, the more effective our work, the more resources that will be available to solve the world’s problems.
