Center for Product Research and Development

Dr. Dan Fields, Director
Center for Product Research and Development

Message from the Director

Thank you for your interest in Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) Center for Product Research and Development (CPRD). The Center serves a role much different than traditional technology transfer centers operated by many Michigan universities. The role of most technology transfer centers is focused on intellectual property management with emphasis on the identification of marketable products, particularly those developed by university research personnel.

EMU's Center for Product Research and Development is focused on fulfilling Eastern Michigan University's role in economic development and community outreach. We are here to help inventors and companies bring their ideas to market; as opposed to finding a market for our own ideas. Priority is placed on projects that are compatible to the Center's capabilities and contribute to the stability and growth of the small business sector of Michigan's economy.

EMU's College of Technology, which houses the Center, has the right blend of faculty expertise and equipment to facilitate the product research and development process. Our faculty have a wonderful blend of engineering and hands-on experience brought about through years of industrial work. Our labs are equipped with industrial-grade computers, software and machines; capable of product design and prototype development.

Through the efforts of the CPRD, the learning environment of students in our academic programs is improved as well. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, students work on the development of real products using the same equipment that they will use upon graduation. This is enhanced by interaction with the inventors and business and industry personnel who will make their livings from these products and provide jobs for the workforce that produces them. The constant interaction with industry also ensures that the various technical curricula are kept up to date.

Thanks again for your interest in the Center for Product Research and Development.

I look forward to discussing your product research and development needs and how we may be able to help make your product dreams a reality.

Dr. Dan Fields
