Speaker Information
Bill Jackson
Paterson School No. 2, New Jersey
Bill Jackson is the Math Facilitator at the Paterson Public School No. 2 in Paterson, NJ. He works with teachers in weekly lesson study from grades 1-8. He teaches sample lessons, mentors new teachers, works with teachers on mathematics content, and collaborates with teachers to plan units and plan and teach lessons. He has been in this position for three years, and prior to that was a classroom teacher for 17 years. His main fields of interest are mathematics and lesson study. He has also taught elementary and middle-school bilingual classrooms for grade3 and 5-8. Mr. Jackson was a Fulbright Memorial Scholar in Japan. He holds a BA in economics from Rutgers University and a MEd from William Paterson University.

Akihiko Takahashi
DePaul University
Akihiko Takahashi is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at the School of Education, DePaul University. He has 19 years experience teaching mathematics in elementary and middle school grades and has participated in lesson study several times each year. Earlier in his teaching career, he was a member of the mathematics department at the Setagaya Elementary School, affiliated with Tokyo Gakugei University. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His doctoral research focused on using technology in problem-solving in middle-school mathematics. More on Dr. Takahahi's background.

Costanza Hazelwood & Mark Mitchell
Learning Point Associates
Learning Points Associates has taken an active role in advocating Lesson Study in the Detroit Public Schools. Constanza Hazelwood brings an international perspective to Lesson Study through her work in schools including South America.
Cheryl Poole
Office of Professional Preparation Services, Michigan Department of Education
Cheryl Poole is the Professional Development Consultant for the Michigan Department of Education. In her position, she oversees the development of state standards and guidelines for the professional development of all teachers in response to the Michigan Revised School Code of the State School Act (2000). In addition, she oversees the application process, disbusement of funds, and program development for the Title IIA Teacher Quality Comptetive Grant Program.

Joan Richardson
Director, Publications for the National Staff Development Council
Joan Richardson is the Executive Director of Publications for the National Staff Development Council (NSDC). In this position, she is responsible for the Journal of Staff Development, Tools for Schools, Results, and NSDC's web site. The National Staff development Council is committed to ensuring success for all students through staff development and school improvement. NSDC's goal is that all teachers in all schools will experience high-quallity professional development. Joan writes extensively on professional development and serves ont the Grosse Point, Michigan Board of Education.

Detroit Public Schools
These educators are the core teachers who have brought Lesson Study to the Detroit Public Schools for the past three years working with Learning Point Associates and Eastern Michigan University. They have conducted and facilitated many Lesson Study research lessons throughout Detroit, and through their facilitation have enabled three additonal Lesson Study cycles bringing in new middle school teachers across the district.
