What is Lesson Study?

Lesson Study is a professional development process that was developed in Japan and is an ongoing professional development practice in which teachers collaborate to plan, observe and refine a lesson.

Many teachers in the United States are interested in this process in light of the TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Study) results, which highlighted the performance and deeper thinking in mathematics by Japanese students Educators in Michigan are looking closely at the strategies of Japanese teachers to help them improve their teaching and their students' achievement in mathematics. A useful book on Lesson Study is The Teaching Gap by James Stigler and James Hiebert.

New Lesson Study Workshop!

On June 23 and June 24, we will be holding a new Lesson Study Conference for those already familiar with lesson study. On June 23, the conference will be held at the Marriott Detroit, Metro Airport Hotel, Romulus, Michigan. On June 24, the conference will be help at Wayne County RESA.
