Sherry Jerome, Associate Professor of Dance, is the current EMU dance program coordinator. She received her bachelor of fine arts degree in ballet with honors from Texas Christian University, where she was the senior scholar in the Department of Ballet and Modern Dance. She received her master of fine arts degree in dance, as a scholarship student, from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She passed Royal Academy of Dancing exams through elementary and trained with such dance notables as David Howard, Maggie Black, Li Chou Cheng, Fernando Schaffenberg and Bruce Marks. Jerome has performed professionally for the Carol Rioux Dance Ensemble in NYC, Ballet Long Island, and for many seasons with the Saint Louis Ballet, dancing in soloist and principal roles in a variety of works including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Cinderella, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She has also performed modern dance with choreographers such as David Hochoy, Danny Clark, Deborah Jowitt, Shapiro & Smith, and is currently a company member of “People Dancing”, directed by Christina Sears Etter. She has previously taught at Chandler High School, professional studios across the country including the school of the Saint Louis Ballet, and at Bowling Green State University, Ohio, where she was an instructor of dance and the artistic director of the University Performing Dancers. At EMU, Jerome currently teaches ballet, pointe, dance production, creative movement for children, teaching methods, dance workshop, introduction to performing arts, and ballet and jazz for non-majors. Her choreography has been presented nationally from Arizona to New York City. She has choreographed full-length ballets, restaged numerous classical works, set her own ballet choreography, and choreographed modern pieces. With Kevin Miller, director of orchestral studies, she co-founded the successful ballet/orchestra collaborative concert series which occur every December at EMU. She has served on the national board of directors of the American College Dance Festival. At EMU, she has received the Graduate Studies and Research Award, the Artistic Recognition Award, and the College of Education Dean’s Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Scholarship of Discovery. Jerome resides in Ypsilanti with her husband, Eric, and two crazy cats.
