Tamara Wilcox, full-time dance musician at EMU since 2000, has worked with some of the world’s greatest dance artists in both ballet and modern dance. At EMU, she plays for ballet and modern major/minor classes and composes for student and faculty choreography. Her compositions for dance include the piece, “One Step Forward, Two Steps Bach,” which she created in collaboration with choreographer Julianne O’Brien Pedersen. As an adjunct faculty member, she teaches the music component of the dance major/minor curriculum.
Her first connections between music and dance were made at Allegheny College, where she studied modern dance with Janyce Hyatt and James Reedy while earning her B.A. in music. In addition, she has studied the Dalcroze technique with master teachers at Carnegie Mellon University. She has played for modern classes with members from companies including Mitzi Adams, Bill Evans, Merce Cunningham, Martha Clarke, Jose Limon, Mark Morris and Peter Sparling. As a class accompanist for the American Ballet Theatre Detroit Summer Intensive, she has worked with Melissa Allen Bowman, Guiseppe Canale, Alaine Haubert, Ted Kivitt and Orlando Molina. She has also played for American College Dance Festivals, the University of Michigan Summer Dance Intensive, the “All Pointes North” Regional Dance America Festival at Interlochen, Michigan, Royal Academy of Dance Exams, and various dance master classes offered by touring companies through the University of Michigan’s University Musical Society. She is a member of the International Guild of Musicians in Dance and the Dalcroze Society of America.
