| AUTHENTICATION CHANGEOVER
FOR MAC OS 7.6 - 9.2
This document will help you change your dialup modem connection to my.emich
authentication. You must have a modem installed correctly, the correct
drivers loaded and a previously working dialup connection through Eastern
Michigan University to successfully complete this process.
Please follow the setup instructions on the ICT
HelpDesk Web site if you need to set up a new
Dial-up (Remote) Internet access.
STEP ONE:
Open the TCP/IP Control Panel,
- In the upper left corner of the menubar, click on the [
]
Apple Menu
- Select Control Panels
- You should see three Control Panel icons:
- TCP/IP
- Modem
- Remote Access (PPP on Mac OS 8.1 and older)
- Open the TCP/IP Control Panel. Your screen should look like this (some
options may vary):

STEP TWO:
Reconfigure TCP/IP
- Under "Connect via," select: PPP.
- Delete the old IP address: 164.76.102.66
- Type in the IP address of EMU's primary name server: 164.76.2.54
- Click in the "Search domains" text box (if available)
and type in EMU's Domain: emich.edu
- Close the TCP/IP window by clicking on the square in the upper left
corner.
- Click the Save button in the Save Changes window.
STEP THREE:
Reconfigure Remote Access (PPP) Control Panel
From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels and click on the Remote
Access Control Panel. If you have Mac OS 8.1 or earlier, this control
panel will be named PPP. Your screen should look like this (Some options
may vary.):
- Under "Connection," select the "Registered User"
option.
- In the "Name" box, type your e-mail address, which consists
of your my.emich account username and
our corresponding domain name
(Ex: yourusername@emich.edu).
In the "Password" box, type your my.emich
password. Your password must be between six and ten characters.
NETWORK SECURITY TIP:
- We strongly recommend that you do not check the "Save password"
box. It's a much better idea to control access by typing in your password
each time.
- Leave the "Password" box blank to better control access,
and to maximize the security of your account. It's really something
you should memorize, and once you become accustomed to typing in the
username and password, you'll find it's easy.
- If you have saved your password, read this:
- You may notice that there are more or less "black dots"
than the number of characters in your password. This is a security
feature to prevent malicious users from guessing your password.
- You can only save the password in Network Preferences, so make
sure it is the correct password. If the wrong password is entered,
authentication will fail. You can not save the password from the
Internet Connect window discussed later.
- Be Responsible: Practice smart computing habits by memorizing
your e-mail address and password.
