| AUTHENTICATION
CHANGEOVER FOR WINDOWS NT COMPUTERS
This document will help you change your dialup modem connection to my.emich
authentication. You must have a modem installed correctly, the correct
drivers loaded and a previously working dialup connection through Eastern
Michigan University to successfully complete this process.
Please follow the setup instructions on the ICT
HelpDesk Web site if you need to set up a new
Dial-up (Remote) Internet access.
STEP ONE:
Edit Your Phone Book Entry and Reconfigure
TCP/IP
Dynamic Addressing means that the Merit NAS system will issue you a temporary
IP number for internet access each time you dial up. Now that RAS and
the TCP/IP protocol are installed, you'll need to configure TCP/IP to
connect to Merit's NAS. To create an EMU profile, you must set the Basic,
Server, and Script options. These are explained below. Your screen should
look like this (some options may vary):

- Click on the Basic tab. You should see a window like the one above.
- Click on the Server tab at the top of the window. The Server window
will look similar to this: (some options may vary)
- Click on the TCP/IP Settings... button. You should see a window like
this:
- The "Server assigned IP address" radio button should be
selected. (In an options group, indicated by the radio button, you can
only select one option)
- The "Specify name server addresses" radio button should
be selected. This will allow you to edit the DNS text boxes. Notice
the input mask (i.e. 4 groups of 3 digits seperated by a dot.) To jump
between each group, simply type 3 digits, or hit the period key, or
click the next area with the mouse.
- Make sure the following information is correctly entered in the "Primary
DNS" and "Secondary DNS" text boxes:
- In "Primary DNS:" text box, MichNet's DNS: 198.108.1.42
- In the "Secondary DNS:" text box, EMU's DNS: 164.76.2.54
- "Use IP Header compression" and "Use default gateway
on remote network" should both be checked.
- Close the TCP/IP settings window by clicking OK.
- Single-click the OK button in the Edit Phonebook Entry window to save
the changes.
STEP TWO:
Connecting To MichNet
- Double-click on the My Computer icon (on the desktop) and then double-click
the Dial-Up Networking folder. The window will look similar to this:
(Some options may vary.)
- Under "Phonebook entry to dial:", select Merit PPP from
the list box.
- Your MichNet number for your dialing location should appear under
the "Phone number preview:" text box.
- "Dialing from" (Where Applicable) can be left as "Default"
(Do not state your phone number)
- Click on the Dial button to connect, an "After Dial Terminal
Window" will appear. (This means that MichNet has answered your
call)
- MichNet may identify itself and it's location with a statement such
as "Merit NAS. You have reached MichNet. You must follow all MichNet
policies"
- You will then be asked for your host location at the "host:"
prompt.
- Type: ppp (lowercase)
- At the "username:" or "login:" prompt, type your
my.emich email address which consists
of your my.emich username and the
corresponding domain name.
- Enter your password when prompted.
- MichNet will then send you access information. If connected successfully,
you may see a statement like "ppp session established..."
followed by lines of computer characters (unreadable by you). Click
Done to connect.
- A connection icon will appear to the left of the clock on the system
tray.
Now you can use Internet applications such as telnet, Netscape or Internet
Explorer. Your Internet dial-up connection is now setup. Keep this documentation
in a safe place for future reference. |
