CHANGEOVER FOR MAC OS X COMPUTERS
This document will help you change your dialup modem connection to my.emich
authentication. You must have a modem installed correctly, the correct
drivers loaded and a previously working dialup connection through Eastern
Michigan University to successfully complete this process.
Please follow the setup instructions on the ICT
HelpDesk Web site if you need to set up a new
Dial-up (Remote) Internet access.
STEP ONE:
Viewing Your Connection Settings
Mac OS X keeps all of your dial-up settings in one convenient place.
You can easily view these settings by opening System Preferences and clicking
on the Network icon.
- Open the Apple Menu [
],
located in the upper left corner of the menubar.
- Select System Preferences.
- Click on the Network icon. Your screen should look like this (some
options may vary):

STEP TWO:
Reconfigure TCP/IP
- Under "Configure," select "Using PPP."
- Delete the old IP address: 164.76.102.66 from the "Domain Name
Servers entry box
- Type in the IP address of EMU's primary name server: 164.76.2.54
- If it's not already there, click in the "Search domains"
text box and type in EMU's Domain: emich.edu
- Click the Save button in the Save Changes window.
- The Network pane (window) of System Preferences will look like this
(Some options may vary.):
STEP THREE:
Reconfigure PPP
- Click on the PPP tab in the Network pane.
- Your screen should look like this (Some options may vary.):
- In the "Service Provider" box, type: Merit PPP.
- In the "Telephone Number" box, type your local MichNet phone
number. If you are dialing only from the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area, your
MichNet number is 4892200. If you are not dialing from Ypsilanti or
Ann Arbor, call User Support and ask for the MichNet number for your
area.*
- In the "Name" box, type your e-mail address, which consists
of your my.emich account username and
our corresponding domain name
(Ex: yourusername@emich.edu).
- In the "Password" box, type your my.emich
password. Your password must be between six and ten characters.
- Click the Apply Now button.
- Quit System Preferences by clicking on the "System Prefs"
menu and selecting "Quit System Prefs."
NETWORK SECURITY TIP:
- We strongly recommend that you do not check the "Save password"
box. It's a much better idea to control access by typing in your password
each time.
- Leave the "Password" box blank to better control access,
and to maximize the security of your account. It's really something
you should memorize, and once you become accustomed to typing in the
username and password, you'll find it's easy.
- If you have saved your password, read this:
- You may notice that there are more or less "black dots"
than the number of characters in your password. This is a security
feature to prevent malicious users from guessing your password.
- You can only save the password in Network Preferences, so make
sure it is the correct password. If the wrong password is entered,
authentication will fail. You can not save the password from the
Internet Connect window discussed later.
- Be Responsible: Practice smart computing habits by memorizing your
e-mail address and password.
