| AUTHENTICATION CHANGEOVER
FOR WIN 95/98/ME
This document will help you change your dialup modem connection to my.emich
authentication. You must have a modem installed correctly, the correct
drivers loaded and a previously working dialup connection through Eastern
Michigan University to successfully complete this process.
Please follow the setup instructions on the ICT
HelpDesk Web site if you need to set up a new
Dial-up (Remote) Internet access.
STEP ONE:
Setting the Dial-Up Properties
Your Dial-Up Networking folder should now look something like this:
- With the right mouse button, single-click once on Merit PPP (this
will open a submenu) and click on Properties.
- Your Merit PPP window will look similar to this (some options may
vary):
- Under Telephone number, your local MichNet number should be listed.
Note: If you are dialing
from the same area code as your local MichNet number, uncheck "Use
area code and Dialing Properties" ("Use country code and area
code" in Windows 95).
- (Window ME only) Click on the Networking tab.
- (Windows 95/98 only) Click on the Server Types tab (Server type button
in Window 95).
- The Networking (Server Types) window will look similar to this (Some
options may vary.):
- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button. You should see a window like
this:

- The "Server assigned IP address" radio button should be
selected.
- Select "Specify name server addresses."
- In the primary DNS box, type in the IP address of Merit's name server:
198.108.1.42
- In the secondary DNS box, type in the IP address of EMU's primary
name server: 164.76.2.54
- Primary and Secondary WINS boxes should remain: 0.0.0.0
- Check "Use IP Header compression" and "Use default
gateway on remote network."
- Close the TCP/IP Settings window by clicking the OK button.
- (Windows 95 only) Click the OK button to close the Server Types window.
- (Windows ME only) Click on the Security tab.
- (Windows ME only) In the "User name" box, type your e-mail
address, which consists of your my.emich Account username and our corresponding
domain name. (Ex: yourusername@emich.edu)
- (Windows ME only) In the "Password" box type your my.emich
password. Your my.emich password must be between six and ten characters
- (Windows ME only) The "Domain" box should be blank, and
all other options should remain unchecked.
- Click the OK button in the Merit PPP window.
STEP TWO:
Connecting to MichNet
Double-click on Merit PPP. A "Connect To" window will open.
You will see this window each time you connect. (Some options may
vary.)
- In the "User name" box, type your e-mail address, which
consists of your my.emich Account username and the corresponding domain
name (Ex: yourusername@emich.edu).
- In the "Password" box, type your my.emich password. Your
my.emich password must be between six and ten characters.
- Your MichNet number should be listed in the "Phone number"
box.
- "Dialing from" (where applicable) can be left as "Default
Location" (Windows 98) or "New Location" (Windows ME).
Do not state your phone number.
- Click the Connect button and your modem should start dialing.
- If you've connected successfully, you may see a Connection Established
window (where applicable). If you see this, click the Close button.
Early versions of Windows 95 require you to click Minimize. A connection
icon will also appear to the left of the clock on the system tray. Early
versions of Windows 95 will have a black box with two blinking lights,
all other versions of Windows use two computers as a connection icon.
NETWORK SECURITY TIP:
- We strongly recommend that you do not check the "Save password"
box. It's a much better idea to control access by typing in your password
each time.
- Leave the "Password" box blank to better control access,
and to maximize the security of your account. It's really something
you should memorize, and once you become accustomed to typing in the
username and password, you'll find it's easy.
- If you have saved your password, read this:
- You may notice that there are more or less "black dots"
than the number of characters in your password. This is a security
feature to prevent malicious users from guessing your password.
- You can only save the password in Network Preferences, so make
sure it is the correct password. If the wrong password is entered,
authentication will fail. You can not save the password from the
Internet Connect window discussed later.
- Be Responsible: Practice smart computing habits by memorizing your
e-mail address and password.
