AUTHENTICATION CHANGEOVER FOR WINDOWS 2000/XP

This document will help you change your dialup modem connection to my.emich authentication. You must have a modem installed correctly, the correct drivers loaded and a previously working dialup connection through Eastern Michigan University to successfully complete this process.

Please follow the setup instructions on the ICT HelpDesk Web site if you need to set up a new Dial-up (Remote) Internet access.

STEP ONE:
Viewing Your Connection Settings

Windows XP keeps all of your dial-up settings in one convenient place. After following our setup instructions, you can easily view these settings by opening the Internet Options Control Panel, and clicking on the connections tab. If you are setting up a dial-up connection for the first time, please follow these steps:

  • Click the start button button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Network and Internet Connections
  • Click on Internet Options
  • Now click on the Connections tab. You'll see a window like this (Some options may vary.):

Internet Properties > Connections tab > Merit PPP (Default); Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present

STEP TWO:
Reconfigure Merit PPP Settings

  • Under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings", single-click "Merit PPP (Default)"
  • Single-click the "Settings..." button
  • Your Merit PPP Settings window will open and look similar to this (some options may vary):
Merit PPP Settings > User name: username@emich.edu
  • Under "Dial-up settings," in the "User name" box, type your e-mail address, which consists of your my.emich Account username and our corresponding domain name (Ex: yourusername@emich.edu)
  • In the "Password" box, type your my.emich password

NETWORK SECURITY TIP:

  • Leave the "Password" box blank to better control access, and to maximize security of your account. It's really something you should memorize, and once you become accustomed to typing in the username and password, you'll find it's easy
  • For an added level of security, leave the "Username" box blank too. It's simple to type in your e-mail address and password each time before connecting.
  • The "Domain" box should be blank, and all other options should remain unchecked
STEP THREE:
Reconfigure Merit PPP Properties
  • Click on the Properties button.
  • You should see the General tab of the Merit PPP Properties window.
  • Your Merit PPP Properties window should now look like this (Some options may vary.):

Merit PPP Properties > Networking tab > Type of dialup server I am calling: PPP: Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet; This connection uses the following items: Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

  • Single-click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
  • Single-click on the Properties button. This will open your Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window

STEP FOUR:
Reconfigure TCP/IP  Settings

Dynamic Addressing means that MichNet will issue you a temporary IP address for Internet access each time you dial-up.

  • The "Obtain an IP address automatically" option should already be selected
  • If it is not already selected, select the "Use the following DNS server addresses" option.
  • In the Alternate DNS server box, type in the IP address of EMU's primary name server: 164.76.2.54
  • Your Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window should now look like this (some options may vary:
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties > Obtain an IP address automatically and Use the following DNS server address: Preferred DNS server: 198.108.1.42; Alternate DNS server: 164.76.102.66
  • Click the OK button to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  • Click the OK button to close your Merit PPP Settings window.
  • In the Connections tab of the Internet Properties window, select the Merit PPP connection icon and click the Set Default button.
  • Your Connections window should now look like this (Some options may vary.):

Internet Properties > Connections tab > Merit PPP (Default); Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present

  • Click the OK button to close the Internet Properties window.
  • You are now ready to log on the Internet using your EMU my.emich account and Merit connection.
