Service Opportunities
The following is a description of Eastern Michigan University civic engagement opportunities for persons who are at least 50 years of age. These opportunities represent only a few of the ways you can become involved. The ElderQuest program looks forward to working with you to identify ways in which you can contribute your talents, skills, life experiences, and expertise to the EMU community. The sky’s the limit!
If you are interested in becoming involved in the EMU community, please contact the ElderQuest program at 734.487.0227 or by e-mail at elderquest@emich.edu.
The EMU Children’s Institute:
The ElderQuest Program at Eastern Michigan University is assisting the Children’s Institute in identifying individuals who would like to serve as Classroom Grandparents. The time commitment is flexible and you can do as few or as many hours you like. The basic roles of a Classroom Grandparent would include reading to individuals or small groups of children, sharing life experiences, and participating during play time. You set your own level of involvement. If your are interested in working with kids 18 months to 6 years old and have a few hours a month to spare, please consider volunteering in the EMU Children’s Institute.
The EMU Children’s institute is located off of West Circle Drive on Eastern Michigan University’s main campus. They are open from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Gear Up:
GEAR UP is a federally funded program serving Wayne-Westland, Willow Run and Ypsilanti School Districts. The program is following the class of 2012 to help encourage them to attend college. Additional supports in school work and social skills are offered to the students. Support is offered to parents and guardians of the students as well.
There is a wide range of possibilities for ElderQuest volunteers that include tutoring and mentoring students, creating student groups, or participating in monthly parent meetings. GEAR UP is eager to hear from elders about the ways they feel they can help support the students and/or parents.
