EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY – EMERITUS FALL MEETING
Emeritus Faculty Association Fall Meeting
Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008
Rm 352 Student Center

Meeting called to order at 1:30 p.m.

REMEMBRANCES:

Helen Ditzhazy, Robert Fisher, Ervin Lamkin (possibly the oldest Emeritus member at the time of his death).

NEW MEMBERS:

J. Sanford Dugan, Janet Kauffman, Gary McCombs, Hugh McSurely, James Robinson, Susan Kattelus, Judith Olson.

UNIVERSITY NEWS:

Provost and Executive VP Loppnow discussed the welcome given to the new President, Susan Martin as well as items related to the Academic Affairs division: Enrollment, research grant funding, leadership development, curricular development, and fund raising.

OLD BUSINESS:

1. Renovation of the University Archives is being planned.

2. The Emeritus Faculty Constitution and By-Laws are being reviewed by the Executive Committee, as required by the constitution every five years.

3. The EMU directory is no longer published by the university; regrettably, the free directory available (paid for by advertising) is filled with errors. The EMU web site is a better source of information.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Greene explained that associate members of the Emeritus Faculty do not enjoy all the benefits of a regular member. They get no ID card, no parking pass, and no EMU e-mail account.

PROGRAM:

1. President Martin discussed some of her many travels on behalf of the university, current plans for renovation of Pray-Harrold and the construction of the new Science Complex, budget challenges and related capital campaigns, and characteristics of currently enrolled students. When asked, she said she would look into the differing death benefits available to the families of emeriti.

2. Rachel Cheng, University Librarian, urged Emeritus Faculty to become involved in the “Memory Project,” an attempt to establish an oral history archive for EMU faculty and student government leaders. She also distributed information about an exhibition of poster art currently in the university library.

Meeting adjourned at 2:45.

Submitted William Cline, Secretary
