Imaginary Invalid
a comedy by Molière,
Directed by Lee Stille
Argon,
a raging hypochondriac attempts to marry off
his beautiful daughter Angelique to an incompetent doctor
in order to obtain
permanent health care. Argon’s gold-digging dominatrix
of a wife, Beline, has her own plans for the future while
his smart, sassy servant Toinette uses her sharp tongue and
sharper wit to keep the chaos under control and the household
together.
Magruder’s
smart and sassy contemporary adaptation includes a prelude,
interludes and a grand finale that bring Molière’s
outrageous social commentary on doctors and medicine back
to the “comédie ballet” that
Molière had originally intended. Honoring this original
intent allows for the marvelous addition of bebopping satyrs,
a collection of harem girl’s doing
a Bollywood/hip-hop mash-up and an opera tango…not
to mention a mariachi chorus of doctors.
A play of idiocy, love, farts
and general mayhem.
