In recent years EMU has organized fundraisers and committed resources to help renovate a number of Ypsilanti's municipal resources, including Rutherford Pool. In 2012 the University raised $12,000 to renovate Rutherford Pool, which had been closed since 2011 and EMU Facilities & Operations staff assisted the City with the bid process, including drafting the bid documents and recommending contractors.
EMU also made a significant contribution to the $1.25 million upgrade of Ypsilanti's Lakeside Park, which is scheduled to be completed in summer 2014. The project is being funded with a $500,000 grant from the Michigan State Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund, $450,000 from EMU, $250,000 from the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission, and $50,0000 raised by the Saline rowing team.
