Fall 2009 CHL455 Adolescent Literature:

Research and Writing Project

Professor: Dr. Annette Wannamaker

Class meets: Mondays and Wednesdays 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Office Hours: Mondays 5 - 6:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 10:30 – 12:30 a.m. and 3:15 – 4:45 p.m.

Students also are encouraged to make appointments during other times and to email with any questions: awannamak@emich.edu

Description and Requirements:
This course is focused on reading, writing about, researching, and discussing adolescent literature and the major issues, debates, and literary criticism about this literature. In class, students will learn about past and current discussions about adolescent literature that will help them to enter into and take part in critical dialogues. As part of a semester-long research and writing project, students will complete a series of reading and writing assignments, which are structured so that the terms, concepts, and skills students learn as they progress throughout the term build upon one another and culminate in a final researched writing project.

There are a total of five writing assignments that make up the Research and Writing Project, four of which require students to follow specific instructions. For the fifth and final assignment, students will write an 8-10 page researched essay about a scholarly topic of their choosing. I am hoping this final assignment will help students to use research in order to develop an academic argument, and to see themselves as scholars entering into a larger conversation.

Writing Assignment No. 1 (summary) Due September 30:

Write a summary of the Keeling essay. The summary should be no more than 250 words, and should be an objective paragraph highlighting Keeling’s thesis and her main points.

Writing Assignment No. 2 (summary/evaluation of academic article) Due October 14:

Write a summary and evaluation of an academic article (see list below) focused on the topic you plan to research. The summary should be no more than 250 words, and should be an objective paragraph highlighting the author’s thesis and main points. The summary must be in your own words and cannot be a copy of an abstract. Then include a 250-word evaluation, which explains the topic you are researching and the ways in which this article will help you to develop your thesis.

Writing Assignment No. 3 (summary of second academic article)

Due October 26:

Follow the directions above using a second academic article.

Articles must be either a chapter from a scholarly book published with an academic press or from one of the following academic journals (some are on the database “Project Muse”)

• The ALAN Review
• The English Journal
• The Looking Glass
• The Children’s Literature Association Quarterly
• Children’s Literature
• The Lion and the Unicorn
• Children’s Literature in Education

Writing Assignment No. 4: (Proposal and Bibliography)

Due November 16

Write a summary of the essay you plan to write, which includes your thesis and a discussion of the literature and research you will use. The summary should be no more than 250 words.

Attach a bibliography of your sources. The bibliography should be in MLA format. It should include the two articles or chapters you summarized earlier, plus at least two additional academic articles, chapters, or books. It should also include bibliographic information for the work(s) of literature you are writing about.

Writing Assignment No. 5: (Researched Essay) Due December 2:

Write an 8-10 page researched essay about a scholarly topic of your choosing, focused on adolescent literature. This essay will be evaluated on the comprehension and application of current critical theories, terms, and debates, on the ability to conduct research, and on the quality of the writing. The quality of writing will be evaluated based on audience awareness, organization, correctness, adherence to MLA citation guidelines, and on the effective use of evidence to build a convincing argument or interpretation. All sources in the essay should be properly quoted and correctly cited in the body of the paper and in the bibliography.

Here are some possible topics (though there are many others):

Censorship of adolescent lit: the censorship of one particular book or author; censorship because of a specific topic; the academic freedom of teenagers, etc.
Controversies about adolescent lit: assumptions about what is “appropriate” or “inappropriate” for younger readers; worries that young people learn to be (insert blank: violent, sexual, occultists, liberals, illiterate, etc.) if they read X book or books; debates about the literary merit of adolescent lit, etc.
Adolescent lit in the classroom: using adolescent lit in dialogue with classic works of lit; adolescent lit vs. the canon in the curriculum; adolescent lit and literacy, etc.
Literary interpretations of adolescent lit: vampires as metaphors for teen angst; depictions of power structures; identity formation; depictions of gender, texts as cultural artifacts, etc.

Whatever topic you choose, you ultimately will need to develop a thesis (a point, an argument, an interpretation, a stand) that you support using the research you’ve conducted combined with the discussions we’ve had in class about texts and ideas.

Grading: Total Project worth 550 points:

No. 1 = 50; Nos. 2, 3, and 4 = 100; No. 5 = 200
I will accept late work, but will deduct 2 percent from the grade for each day an assignment is overdue.
