Biography:
After eleven years of teaching high school English in central California, I returned to graduate school to learn more about teaching and learning and how to prepare teachers for the classroom. I arrived at Michigan in 2001 to begin my career at EMU, and I’ve learned to appreciate the hand as a map, the passing of winter (although snow fall can be peaceful and beautiful), and the many running trails in the area.

As an English educator I live within a variety of academic worlds, the disciplines that constitute the English department (e.g., Linguistics, Literature, and Writing) and academic courses and services offered by the College of Education. I mainly teach courses that focus in some way on writing and instructional methods for secondary school teachers and students. I love teaching at EMU and often work with students beyond the classroom to help them develop as classroom teachers and leaders in education.

Locally, I coordinate accreditation demands of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for the English department in conjunction with the College of Education. I co-direct the Eastern Michigan Writing Project (EMWP), presently as an administrative director of Inkstains, young writers’ camps for middle and high school students. I co-edit Language Arts Journal of Michigan, sponsored by Michigan Council of Teachers of English (MCTE), and I currently serve as treasurer of Language and Social Processes, a special interest group of American Educational Research Association (AERA).
