| Biography:
|
Melissa Motschall is a professor of public relations. She has been a faculty member since September 1995, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate level public relations and advises the Eleanor Wright Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. She has taught public relations, advertising, and communication courses at the University of Detroit, Wayne State University, and Emerson College in Boston.
In addition to teaching, Motschall works on freelance public relations projects. She has assisted private, small business, and nonprofit organizations with strategic communications, media relations, proposal development,and internal communications.
Prior to coming to EMU, Motschall served as communication director for Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies, where she created and executed a public relations program, including publications development, media relations, special events, and community outreach.
Aside from teaching and public relations activities, Motschall’s research program includes public relations career development and pedagogy. In July 2005, she released a study of local practitioners' careeer development experiences. the research report is based on data collected during a one-year research sabbatical leave.
Motschall's research also has focused on issus of pubic relations pedagogy. Her work on teaching the introductory course in public relations has appeared in the Public Relations Review and she presented papers on public relations innovations and assessment at national conferences in Chicago and Seattle. She recently was invited to co-write and develop the instructor materials for a new introducory public relations textbook, which is slated for release in 2006.
Motschall also has published work on police communication in the Police Quarterly, Central States Speech Communication Journal and the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin.
Motschall has a Ph.D. in organizational communication and rhetoric from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in organizational communication from Purdue University. She also is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and serves as a board member of the Detroit Chapter of the PRSA. |
