James
Pinson
James
Pinson is a professor of journalism at EMU and has
taught here since the fall of 1990. He holds a doctorate in
journalism from the University of Missouri, where he also taught
for six years.
He
is co-author with Brian S. Brooks and Jean Gaddy Wilson of "Working
With Words," a grammar, style and usage guide for student
and professional journalists, as well as its accompanying workbook.
He is also co-author with Brooks of the "St. Martin's
Wire Services Hotline," a computer program, and co-author with Brooks and Jack Z. Sissors of "The Art of Editing" and its accompanying workbook.

Carol
Schlagheck
Carol Schlagheck is a professor of journalism at
Eastern Michigan University. She holds a bachelors degree
in communication from the University of Toledo, a masters
degree in journalism from Michigan State University and a doctoral
degree in mass communication from Bowling Green State University.
Schlagheck
has more than 20 years of journalism experience. She was a founder
of a community weekly, which she edited for two years, then
worked at the Monroe (Mich.) Evening News as a reporter, feature
editor and copy editor for more than 10 years, and continues
to work as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines.

Charles
E. Simmons
Journalism Professor Charles E. Simmons attended schools in Detroit, holds a BA degree
from Langston University, Oklahoma; a 'MS from Columbia University
in New York City; and a Juris Doctor (JD) from Georgetown University
in Washington. His articles have appeared in African American,
national and international newspapers and magazines, and he
has hosted a radio program in Los Angeles.
He
has reported news in Africa, the Middle East, Europe as well
as in the United States. A former legislative assistant to U.S.
Rep. John Conyers, Simmons has taught at Howard University in
Washington and California State University-Los Angeles. He is
currently a member of the advisory editorial board of the Michigan
Citizen Newspaper and the board of directors of the Detroiters
Working for Environmental Justice.

Christine M. Tracy Christine M. Tracy is a rhetorician, media ecologist, and communications
scholar. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., where she was a founding editor of
Computer-Mediated Communication, one of the Web’s first e-zines. Her “The
Evolution of the Newspaper of the Future,” was published in The Proficient
Reader and in Perspectives: Online Journalism. Other recent publications
include “The Trilogy List: An Effective Rhetorical Strategy for Designing
Digital Texts,” Language Arts Journal of Michigan. She is currently
working on a book project for Hampton Press: “Into the Newssphere: An
Exploration of News and Information Delivery as an EcoSystem.” Her
research focuses on developing an ecology of news and studying digital
journalism and the shifts in consciousness precipitated by emergent media
practices. She is a member of the Media Ecology Association, Rhetoric
Society of America, and the National Communication Association. She lives
in Ann Arbor with her dog Heidi.

Arnold
Mackowiak
Arnold
Mackowiak is an Ann Arbor News copy editor and a frequent
lecturer for the EMU Journalism Program.
Sheryl James
Sheryl James, an EMU alum, is winner of the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing and a reporter for The Detroit Free Press. She is a frequent journalism lecturer.
