Undergrad Programs
Following are tips and links for more information related to issues of scheduling and class selection.
As an undergraduate, once you declare a major in the English department, you should see an advisor to help you think about what courses you will register for and to answer any questions you may have about the structure of the program. Whether you are a major or a minor, there are a few important basics to know:
- ENGL 300 Writing About Literature is the first course you should take for any major or minor in Literature or Language, Literature and Writing. You may take it either before or at the same time as your first 300-level literature course. You must take it, as well as at least 2 courses at the 300-level, before you can take any 400-level courses.
- The General Education courses in Native American Literature and African American Literature (160 and 161) do not satisfy requirements on the major or minor. If you took these courses as part of your Gen Ed requirements, you will still have to take one 300-level course in one of these topics to satisfy your major/minor. You can be assured, however, that the 300-level courses are not repetitions of the 100-level offerings, and you will have opportunities in these upper-division courses to study different texts, and analyze at at a deeper level, than a Gen Ed course would allow.
- LITR 490 Senior Seminar is required as a capstone course for these majors (and minors?). You should try to take it as close to the end of your degree requirements as possible. This course is never offered in the Spring or Summer terms, but is always offered in Fall and Winter, so plan your schedule accordingly.
- The undergraduate programs are not night-based programs. Each semester, we offer at least one 300-level LITR course and one 400-level LITR course in evening hours, and we rotate which specific courses are offered each term, but if you are hoping to complete your degree solely at night, you should plan on it taking a bit longer to meet all the requirements.
- Some courses have subject matter that varies widely by instructor (LITR 443, 450, 479, and 480). Course descriptions of topics that will be covered in the upcoming semester’s offering of these courses are available on the Courses page of this site.
