Megan Stockton

Master's in Creative Writing, Eastern Michigan University, 2018

BathHouse Journal Editor, 2016-2018

Megan Stockton is a poet, publisher, and teacher in Detroit. Her writing has appeared in "BigBig, Wednesday Bearings: Works About Boundaries, Hypocrite Reader" and "Flint Magazine". She teaches creative writing at the Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility and is a poetry instructor for "Inside/Out", a vibrant poetry in the schools program in Detroit. She has presented critical and creative work at the New Narrative Conference UC Berkeley, 2017), the "Eco Justice and Activism Conference"(EMU, 2018) and at the "Allied Media Conference" (Detroit, 2017).

"I was initially drawn to the creative writing master's program at EMU because of the radical experimental work being sponsored in the classes and syllabi, and because of the faculty members, many of whom are poets whose work I'd studied and loved prior to moving to Michigan. My experience in the Creative Writing program was complex, engaging, and challenging. The politics of the poem, the classroom, and the university were taken seriously in the courses I took, and the stakes of our writing, our workshopping, and the relations embedded in these activities were actively discussed and contested. Through my time in the CW program, many incredibly meaningful relationships and opportunities arose, such as co-facilitating a poetry workshop at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility, presenting my own work at the Communal Presence Conference in Berkeley, CA, and corresponding with and publishing many of my favorite authors through my editorship at BathHouse journal. My writing practice and writing community has significantly deepened during my time at EMU, and I'm grateful to have traces of conversations with my peers and professors - both inside and outside the classroom - woven through my work."
