Biology Workshops:
Workshop #1 (WS 1): Reading and Understanding Scientific Journal Articles
Workshop participants will bring copies of scientific journal articles provided by their instructors for an in-depth examination of the conventions and writing strategies utilized in scientific journal articles. This workshop will analyze the conventions using a step-by-step process and specific analytic questions to facilitate a better understanding of how to read and write scientific papers according to the conventions of the discipline. For this workshop you must bring in a printed copy of the scientific journal article provided by your instructor for Reading Assignment 1.
Workshop #2 (WS 2): Preparing To Write for Upper-Level Science Writing
This workshop will provide detailed strategies for preparing to write scientific papers that meet the expectations for upper-level science courses. This workshop includes tips about: outlining strategies, understanding the differences between an introductory-level paper and an upper-level paper, time management strategies, and establishing the appropriate flow for a scientific paper.
Workshop #3 (WS 3): Revision Strategies for Science Writing
This workshop will cover specific strategies for revising your scientific papers. With helpful tips and tricks to help you organize, evaluate and strengthen your writing, you will be able to craft an effective revising plan that will work for you.
Workshop #4 (WS 4): Practicing Revising Your Own Scientific Writing
This workshop will put the revision plan you developed in "Revision Strategies for Science Writing" to practical use in your own papers. For this workshop you must bring in a science paper that you are revising and identify two or more specific concerns that you would like to work on during the workshop. Writing Consultants will assist you with the application of revision techniques (covered in Workshop #3) to your own writing. For this reason, you must attend Workshop 3 BEFORE you are able to attend Workshop 4. Workshop 4 may be repeated for credit up to three times.
Workshop #5 (WS 5): Presenting Your Scientific Research
With the end-of-term presentations near, you will want some concrete, practical strategies for presenting your scientific research to larger groups. This workshop will provide strategies to strengthen and streamline your presentations, from posters to power points to delivery.
