Where can I get help with my writing?
EMU writers can get help with their writing in two locations.
The University Writing Center offers targeted course workhops
open to all EMU students. Check the
University Writing Center
web site for workshop information and registration.
Drop in, one-to-one consulting on writing, research, and technology is available at the Academic Projects Center , 104 Halle Library. The APC is open 11-5 Monday-Thursday.
Q: What kind of help can I get in the University Writing Center?
A: The University Writing Center provides workshops open to all EMU students that are targeted to specific courses. Workshops cover topics from "Managing Your Writing Time" to "Using Sources Ethically and Appropriately," from "Sentence Infrastructure and Polishing Your Work" to "What is Scientific Writing?" For a full schedule of workshops, visit the University Writing Center home page. Registration for workshops is required, and instructions for registration can also be found on the home page.Q: I want to talk one-to-one to a writing consultant about a paper for a course. Where can I go to do that?
A: You can get one-to-one consulting on your work at the Academic Projects Center, 104 Halle Library. UWC consultants and Halle Librarians can help you with writing or research, and ICT staff can help with technology-related questions.Q: Do I need an appointment at the APC?
A: No. The APC is a drop-in service. Consultants will spend 20-30 minutes per paper, depending on needs. Winter 2008 hours are 11-5 M-Th.
Q: When I visit the APC, what should I bring?
A: Bring your paper, in whatever form you have it--final draft, rough draft, or a few brainstormed notes. Also bring the assignment, syllabus, or notes related to the writing project. That way, we know what the instructor is looking for in your paper and can better help you work toward fulfilling those expectations. In the case of a research paper, bring your book and any related research materials you have.
Q: Who staffs the Writing Center?
A: Graduate assistants and instructors from the English Department staff the University Writing Center and the Academic Projects Center. As your writing consultants, we have a great deal of experience writing academic papers and have been trained to work with you.
Q: What should I expect when I arrive for my appointment?
A: You can expect APC consultants to provide feedback on the content of your project first, and then on the structure, organization, and use of disciplinary conventions in the document. We will give you feedback as experienced critical readers and as writing consultants. As the author, you should be prepared to discuss with us your intent as we use a discovery process to focus on the purpose of and audience for your writing. We will not simply edit and proofread your paper, and we will not write or re-write your paper for you. Working with APC consultants does not guarantee you a better grade. When you leave, you can expect to have feedback and know what steps to take next. If you make revisions and would like additional consultation, feel free to make another appointment.
