FAQ: Undergraduate Students in Written Communication

If you have questions about the graduate program in written communication and you don't find the answers here, feel free to contact Steven D. Krause, Writing Program Coordinator, at skrause@emich.edu

What is the difference between a major in Written Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, and Creative Writing?

While students in Written Communication take courses in Journalism, Public Relations, and Creative Writing, each of these majors are different in terms of requirements and emphasis. For example, while students in Written Communication can take courses in Creative Writing as part of required or restricted electives (depending on the strand). However, students who major in Creative Writing take primarily courses in Creative Writing and Literature. The same can be said about Journalism and Public Relations as well.

What should I minor in as a Written Communication major?

You can minor in any area or subject of interest to you, but we do suggest a minor that will complement your strengths and employment opportunities. Popular minors include Literature, History, Political Science, Communications, Art, the sciences, and minors in the College of Business and the College of Technology. Journalism, Public Relations, and Creative Writing can be good minors for Written Communication majors, though it can make satisfying restricted electives a bit more complicated since you cannot "double-dip" for the major and the minor. We do not recommend that you minor writing.

Can I switch from one track to another in the major?

Yes-- the major is designed so students can switch from (for example) the writing studies strand to the technical communication strand quite easily. The main issue is you need to make sure that the courses you take will apply to the requirements for each strand.

Can I get college credit for an internship?

Yes. To do this, you should see an advisor. Generally speaking, we will arrange an independent study where the subject is your internship experience. Note that you need to arrange your own internships.
