The Teaching of Writing option in the MA in Written Communications offers a master’s degree designed to further the training and education of elementary, secondary, and college teachers who teach writing. Our students take classes in composition and rhetoric pedagogy with the goal of pursuing or furthering a career in the teaching of English and writing. The program also provides a thorough preparation for those students interested in pursuing a Ph.D in composition and rhetoric.
Most of the students in our program come from southeast Michigan, and many of our students are full-time junior high and high school teachers. There is funding available for full-time MA students interested in teaching writing courses within EMU’s English department.
Besides being closely tied to the Professional and Technical Writing program, the Teaching of Writing Program is also closely tied to the English Education program and the Eastern Michigan Writing Project, which offers school year and summer workshops for K-college teachers.
We also offer a certificate program in the Teaching of Writing.
