Who are the contest sponsors?

Eastern Michigan University, the Detroit Pistons, The Ann Arbor News and MLive.com are sponsoring the Education First Merit Scholarship Essay Contest.

Who is eligible to enter?

Current high school juniors and seniors, and transfer students are eligible.

What could I win?

You could win one of three Grand Prizes:

1. One high school junior will earn $7,500 in tuition and fees to attend EMU for 2009-2010.

2. One high school senior will earn $7,500 in tuition and fees to attend EMU for 2008-2009.

3. One transfer student will earn $7,500 in tuition and fees to attend EMU for 2008-2009.

All three winning Grand Prize entries will be announced on emich.edu, pistons.com, and during halftime of the April 11 Detroit Pistons home game. In addition, the winners will have their names flashing in lights on The Palace arena LED screen and scoreboard, and will be given two tickets to watch the game.

Plus, EMU will select one Grand Prize winning entry to receive a “Best of Show” prize package:

• Autographed Pistons jersey

• Tour of The Palace of Auburn Hills and Pistons locker room

EMU will also award $1,000 individual on-campus housing grants to five high school juniors and five high school seniors. Each contest participant will receive an EMU T-shirt.

How do I enter?

Drop by EMU’s Explore Eastern Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 5, 2008. Visit emich.edu/explore to register or for more information.

Are there other ways to enter?

No. To be eligible, you must write and enter your essay during the open house.

What is the essay contest topic?

"How have you made Education First in your life?"

Is there an essay contest time or word limit?

Entrants will be given 30 minutes to write their essay in a blue book, which will be provided to you at the start of the essay session. There is no word limit. One entry per student. Please review all contest rules.

Will I be allowed to use a computer to compose my essay?

No. All essays will be handwritten in a blue book.

When is the essay contest deadline?

The contest takes place on campus April 5, 2008, during the Explore Eastern Open House. This is the only opportunity to participate in the essay contest.

If I do not attend EMU, may I still keep the prize?

No. Prizes are not transferable. They must be applied during the 2008-2009 (for freshman and transfer winners) or 2009-2010 (for high school junior winner) academic year. Who will decide who wins?

A selected committee of EMU faculty and staff will review all essays and choose the winners.

What are the criteria for the winning essays?

Criteria include originality, clarity of ideas, creativity, commitment to "Education First," and writing skill.
