Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL)

Faculty Development Seminar:
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Facilitated by Jeffrey L. Bernstein, Department of Political Science

*APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED: June 7, 2008 by 5pm*

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) movement attempts to raise teaching to its well-deserved position of prominence in the academy by encouraging more discussion of teaching and student learning among instructors. It also encourages faculty members to empirically investigate student learning in their classes, using a variety of me thods, and then to make public the results of their inquiry.

This seminar will give faculty the tools to develop and implement their own SOTL projects in their classes. Faculty will spend the fall 2008 term engaging in discussions of the SOTL literature; they will also work with each other in a supportive interdisciplinary learning community to design a SOTL project to be implemented in a winter 2008 course. In the winter, the seminar will me et to track progress on projects and to discuss how to make student learning visible. The 2006-07 cohort produced an edited volume of their project reports and the 2007-08 cohort plans to do the same thing; we eagerly anticipate doing the same with next year's cohort of faculty.

This seminar will meet every other week for ninety minutes during the fall 2008 and winter 2009 semesters (once during December and April) at a time of mutual convenience to the group. Faculty will receive a $1000 honorarium for their participation in the project, $500 to be paid at the conclusion of the fall semester upon submission of a project plan for the winter term, and $500 to be paid upon submission of a final project report, suitable for the edited volume, by June 1, 2009.
