Lawrence Hochman, a former associate professor of physics
at Eastern Michigan University, died Jan. 25. He was 79.
Hochman began teaching at EMU in 1966. Records were not
found indicating when he left the University.
After leaving the teaching profession, Hochman worked
for the Wayne County Human Relations Department. He obtained
a law degree and practiced civil rights and employment
discrimination law. Hochman was involved in the civil rights
movement all of his life.
Hochman received his doctorate in physics from Adelphi
University in Garden City, N.Y. He received both his master's
and bachelor's degrees from Wayne State University.
Hochman was a member of the American Physical Society.
He also was involved with Ann Arbor Citizens for New Politics,
Congress of Racial Equality and the American Civil Liberties
Union.
Survivors include his wife, Elise; and his two children,
David and Aaron.
A memorial celebration is scheduled Saturday, April 25,
at 12:30 p.m., at the First Unitarian Universalist Church
in Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his
memory may be made to the progressive cause of one's choice.
