The following are news briefs about activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

  • West Circle Drive traffic now one-way: As of March 2, vehicular traffic on West Circle Drive will become one-way only. Access into the South Oakwood Parking Lot via the north entry gate will remain. However, vehicles will not be able to travel beyond that point. A roadway barrier and sign has been located to identify the point where one-way traffic begins. Other informational and directional signage has been located along Oakwood Drive in both directions to help identify this change. For more information, contact Chad Crocker, 487-3407.

    Catherin Lee Ha

    Catherine Lee Ha memorial: EMU Athletics hosts a memorial program for former EMU student/athlete Catherine Lee Ha Thursday, March 5, 7-8:15 p.m., Jones Natatorium. Lee Ha was a member of EMU's women's swimming and diving team until she passed away last Nov. 30. Lee Ha was a a two-time All-Mid-American Conference second-team selection and was instrumental in helping the Eagles capture consecutive MAC Championship titles in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The campus community is invited to attend the memorial, which will be conducted by her former teammates. For more information, contact Stephannnie Harvey at sharvey6@emich.edu.
  • Safety forum: The University community is invited to join President Susan Martin for a safety and security forum Thursday, March 5, 4-5:30 p.m., room 310A, Student Center. The forum will provide updates on campus safety and security issues as well as the opportunity to ask questions. If you have not registered for the emergency alert system via RAVE, please do so now. To register, go to http://www.emich.edu/alerts/ There is no charge from EMU for this service and it only will be used in the event of a campus emergency.   • New staff headshots needed: New faculty and staff (PT07 or higher), who were approved at the Feb. 24 Board of Reents meeting, need to schedule a photo with University Photographer Randy Mascharka as soon as possible.   • Phi Kappa Phi letters to go out: More than 1,200 EMU students qualify this year for initiation into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline scholastic honor society. Letters of invitation will be sent out via e-mail to eligible students immediately upon return from winter break. A scholarship application will be included in this letter.     Distinguished Speaker Series continues: Edward Goldman, associate vice president and deputy general counsel for the University of Michigan, presents, "Legal and Ethical Issues in Clinical Research with Human Subjects," Thursday, March 12, 7:30 p.m., in St. Joseph's Hospital's Continuing Education Auditorium. Goldman is an internationally known expert in the area of ethical and legal aspects of medical practice and clinical research. He also served on President Clinton's White House Task Force on Legal Aspects of Health Care Reform. The lecture is part of EMU's Clinical Administration Distinguished Speaker Series. The lecture is free and open to all EMU students, faculty and the community.
  • Annual Graduate Student Art Show: The Annual Graduate Art Show, which kicks off today, showcases the work of the at department's graduate students and coincides with the annual Graduate Research Fair. Numerous media and types of subjects are presented in Ford Gallery through March 20. A reception is scheduled Tuesday, March 3, 4-6 p.m., Ford Gallery. All art is eligible for the Graduate School's Artistic Excellence Awards. Monetary recognition awards will be announced at 5 p.m. during the reception.   • Student Essay Contest: Eastern Michigan University celebrates 160 years of putting "Education First" Saturday, March 28. To celebrate EMU's legacy in education, the University will host a student essay contest (excludes EMU faculty and staff). The essay topic is "How I Make Education First in My Life." Entries must be at least 500 words, typed and double-spaced. Essays must be submitted to the Office of Marketing and Communications, 15 Welch Hall, no later than Monday, March 16. The top three essays will be selected as winners and each will receive a $160 gift certificate from the EMU Bookstore. Entries will be judged Tuesday, March 17, by the associate vice president of marketing and communications. Upon selection, winners will be notified by telephone. Winners will appear in an announcement in EMU Today and will be honored at an upcoming University House reception hosted by EMU President Susan Martin.   • Save the date: All staff and faculty, who have service anniversaries in 2009 of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service, should please mark their calendars for Tuesday, March 24, as the University celebrates its annual Employee Recognition Program. It honors staff and faculty who have achieved these consecutive years of service. A breakfast and special program will take place in the Student Center Ballroom. During the program, these employees will receive a brochure from which to order their own individual gift. Invitations and a more detailed announcement will be forthcoming.
