The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents, at its
Feb. 24 meeting, approved the commencement speakers for
the April commencement ceremonies.

Smith |
Richard M. Smith, chairman of Newsweek, will be the commencement
speaker for the morning commencement ceremony Sunday, April
26, while Kenneth Fine, former vice president and general
manager of several Fortune 50 corporations, will be the
keynote speaker at the afternoon ceremony.
Smith joined Newsweek in 1970 on a four-week writing tryout.
After serving as a writer in the international and national
affairs departments, he moved to Hong Kong and became the
Asian editor and Hong Kong bureau chief. In 1978, he became
editor of the magazine's international editions. In 1984,
Smith was named editor-in-chief of Newsweek and then became
the president and CEO in 1991. He was named chairman in
1998.
Smith graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Albion College in
Michigan in 1968.

Fine |
Fine has spent more than 25 years as an executive with
companies such as Intel Corporation, Digital Equipment
Corporation and Valid-Logic Systems.
Until his retirement in the late 1990s, Fine spent 14
years with Intel, the world's largest semiconductor company.
His last appointment within Intel was as the vice president
and general manager of the Semiconductor Products Group.
Fine grew up in Detroit and graduated from Central High
School. Fine began his post-secondary education at EMU
and credits EMU mathematics professor Robert Bridgeman
as inspiring him to pursue a career in math.
