The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents approved
the appointments of 22 new staff at its regular meeting
Feb. 24.
Of the 22 appointments, nine ( 41 percent) are female
and 13 (59 percent) are male. The group includes 12 Caucasians
(55 percent), nine African Americans (42 percent) and one
Hispanic (4 percent). A 24th staff member listed is an
assistant football coach who was a current employee who
was retained, but granted a promotion.
Those receiving appointments are:

English |
Ron English, of Louisville, Ky., head
coach, football. Before coming to Eastern Michigan University,
English was defensive coordinator for the University of
Louisville during 2008. Previously, he was an assistant
coach at the University of Michigan from 2003-2007, first
as a secondary coach and then defensive coordinator. In
2006, English oversaw a Michigan defense that was ranked
10th nationally in total defense and first against the
run. English also had assistant coaching jobs at Arizona
State University (1994-1995 and 1998-2002), San Diego State
University (1996-1997), Northern Arizona University (spring
1996) and Mt. San Antonio College (1993). English received
his master's degree in education administration from Arizona
State University and his bachelor's degree in social sciences
from the University of California-Berkeley.
Kevin Wolthausen, of Ypsilanti, associate head coach/defense,
football. Wolthausen, with 28 years of coaching experience,
previously was an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University
during 2002 and, most recently, was a defensive coach with
the Atlanta Falcons during 2007. He also has had coaching
stints at the University of Louisville, Arizona State University,
the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern
California, the University of Arizona, Humboldt State University,
Cal State Northridge University and the Arizona Rattlers
of the Arena League. Wolthausen received his bachelor's
degree in physical education from Humboldt State University.

Karcher |
Ken Karcher, of Toledo, Ohio, assistant coach, offensive
coordinator/quarterbacks, football. Karcher previously
was the quarterbacks coach at the University of Toledo
in 2008. He also was head coach of Liberty University from
2000-2005. Karcher played collegiately at Notre Dame and
Tulane, and also in the NFL for the Denver Broncos. Karcher
received his bachelor's degree in general studies from
Tulane University.
Tom Burpee, of Louisville, Ky., assistant
coach, tight ends/special teams, football. Before coming
to EMU, Burpee was a graduate assistant coach at the University
of Louisville in 2008. Previously, Burpee served in a number
of roles — including student manager, undergraduate assistant
coach, volunteer assistant and defensive quality control
coach — for
the University of Michigan football team, from 2002-2007.
Burpee received his bachelor's degree from the University
of Michigan.

Lewis |
Eric Lewis, of Louisville, Ky., assistant
coach, defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, football.
Before coming to EMU, Lewis coached defensive backs at
the University of Louisville in 2008. Prior to that, Lewis
was an assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers. Lewis
also was a secondary coach at Ball State University from
2003-2005, an assistant coach at Bucknell during 2002 and
a graduate assistant coach at Michigan State University
during 2001. Lewis received his bachelor's degree in finance
from San Diego State University.

Anderson |
Kurt Anderson, of Ann Arbor, assistant
coach, offensive line, football. Anderson previously was
assistant coach/tight ends at EMU during 2008. Before that,
Anderson was a graduate assistant coach at the University
of Michigan from 2006-2007 and an assistant coach at Indiana
State University during 2005. Anderson received his bachelor's
degree in sports management from the University of Michigan.
Anderson is technically not a new EMU employee, but was
retained and received a promotion when new head coach
Ron English took over the football program.
Antonio Carter, of Tallahassee, Fla., assistant coach/wide
receivers, football. Before coming to EMU, Carter was wide
receivers coach at Appalachian State University during
2008. Carter began his coaching career as a graduate assistant
coach at the University of Texas El-Paso from 2005-2006
and a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama in
2007. Carter received his bachelor's degree in human environmental
sciences from the University of Alabama.
Tim Carter, of Durham, N.C., assistant coach/defensive
backs, football. Carter, the brother of Antonio Carter,
most recently was a graduate assistant coach at East Carolina
University from 2006-2008. Carter received his master's
degree in exercise science from East Carolina University
and his bachelor's degree in social science from Tulane
University.
Casey Creehan, of Ypsilanti, assistant
coach/defensive line, football. Prior to coming to EMU,
Creehan was an assistant coach with the Montreal Alouettes
during 2008, helping the team make the Grey Cup championship
team. Previously, Creehan was an assistant coach/defensive
line for the Calgary Stampeders from 2004-2007. He also
has been an assistant coach at James Madison, Clarion,
Southern Illinois and LeHigh universities. Creehan received
his master's degree in health and physical education from
Emporia State University and his bachelor's degree in political
science from Grove City College.
Tyrone Wheatley, of Ypsilanti, assistant
coach/running backs. Wheatley, who enjoyed a 10-year professional
career with the N.Y. Giants and the Oakland Raiders from
1995-2004, most recently was an intern coach at Ohio Northern
University in 2008. The MVP of the 1994 Rose Bowl, Wheatley
served as an evaluator at the Rising Stars Football Camp
in 2008 and was the head football and track coach at Dearborn
Heights Robichaud High School from 2006-2007. Wheatley
received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the
University of Michigan.
Amanda Lefeld, of Canton, director, business
operations, University Health Services. Lefeld previously
was business manager of University Health Services from
2007-2009. Prior to that, she was a customer service representative
for RECON Management System from 2004-2007. Lefeld received
both her master's degree in human resources and organizational
development, and her bachelor's degree in health administration
from Eastern Michigan University.

Wesley |
Mark Wesley, of Chelsea, director of
emergency management, public safety/parking. Prior to coming
to EMU, Wesley was planning and program development section
manager for the Michigan Department of State Police's Emergency
Management and Homeland Security Division from 2005-2009.
He also was that organization's local planning unit manager
from 2004-2005. Wesley received his master's degree in
urban planning from the University of Michigan and his
bachelor's degree in public administration from Eastern
Michigan University.
Ray Perkins, of South Lyon, officer, campus police, public
safety/parking. Before coming to EMU, Perkins was a child
abuse investigator with the Detroit Police Department from
2001-2008. He also was a police officer/coordinator there
from 2000-2001 and a police officer from 1996-2000. Perkins
received his bachelor's degree in public administration
from Eastern Michigan University.
Theresa Uscinowicz, of Plymouth, health
and safety specialist, health safety administration. Prior
to coming to EMU, Uscinowicz was a quality and environmental
healthy and safety manager for Future Tool and Machine
in Romulus from 2007-2009. Previously, she was a health
and safety specialist for BASF Chemical Company in Southfield
during 2006 and was a senior quality assurance and safety
specialist/hazardous materials officer as NSF International
in Ann Arbor from 1998-2006. Uscinowicz received her bachelor's
degree in biological sciences from Wayne State University.
Lori Kilian, of Dexter, staff nurse, health services administration.
Before coming to EMU, Kilian was a pediatric office nurse
for Turke and Thomashow Pediatrics from 1999-2008. She
also was a student health services nurse in Snow Health
Center from 2006-2008. Kilian received her bachelor's degree
in nursing from the University of Michigan.
Susan Smith, of Royal Oak, project coordinator,
Institute for Language Information Technology. Previously,
Smith was a Webmaster for the Linguistic Society of America
in Washington, D.C., from 2007-2008; and had multiple roles
with the LINGUIST List at EMU from 2006-2008.
Laura Urteaga-Fuentes, of Ann Arbor,
project coordinator, Wraparound Program, special education.
Before coming to EMU, she was a clinical therapist intern
at the Development Center in Detroit during 2008 and a
student services representative for the University of Michigan's
School of Social Work from 2007-2008. Urteaga-Fuentes received
her master's degree in social work and bachelor's degrees
in fine arts and English, all from the University of Michigan.
Stephen Edwards, of Ypsilanti, platform
specialist I, DoIT enterprise applications and services.
Edwards previously was a student senior technician for
EMU's Division of Information Technology Help desk from
2004-2008 and a Web server administrator for in-the-box
Technologies in Kimball, Mich., from 2007-2008. Edwards
received his bachelor's degree in network information technology
administration from Eastern Michigan University.
