Former EMU leadership and counseling professor dies

Helen Ditzhazy, professor of leadership and counseling at EMU from 1987 until she retired in 2007, died June 22. She was 81.

Ditzhazy received her bachelor's degree in 1948 and master's degree in 1952 from Michigan State University. She received her doctorate in 1972 from the University of Michigan.

During her career, she was the assistant principal of Lee M. Thurston High School in Redford, principal of Novi High School, administrative assistant at Novi Community Schools and assistant superintendent of Jackson Public Schools. She came to Eastern as an associate professor of leadership and counseling in 1987. After two years at EMU, she was granted tenure and then promoted to full professor in 1992.

"Although she had been experiencing health challenges in recent months, Helen remained in good spirits," said Sally Rosales, secretary in the department of leadership and counseling. "She was eager to continue her involvement in projects with and for students in the department of leadership and counseling."

Ditzhazy was a Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian, member of Phi Delta Kappa and past president of the John Sackett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She also was a descendant of Edward Doty, the Mayflower Compact signor.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years, Joseph Ditzhazy; one daughter, Carol Vogel of Beloit, Wisc.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled Tuesday, July 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ward Presbyterian Church, 40000 W. 6 Mile, in Northville. The family will be at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Following the service, the church will provide light refreshments.
