  • Friend Days at the Music Academy: The EMU Community Music Academy presents "Friend Days at the Academy."   • Family Ties and Aging: The Gerontology Program presents its annual fall lecture, "Family Ties and Aging: Past, Present and Future," Wednesday, Oct. 29, 4 p.m., Ballroom B, Student Center. Dr. Ingrid Arnet Connidis, professor of sociology, at the University of Western Ontario, is the guest speaker. Connidis's research explores facets of aging and family relationships, including work-family balance, sibling ties, family ties across generations, and family ties of gay and lesbian adults.   • Emergency management director open forums: Candidates for the emergency management director will be on campus Thursday, Oct. 30 (Mark Wesley) and Nov. 6 (John Abbo). Open forum sessions are scheduled at 1:30 p.m., room 352, Student Center, for the campus community to ask questions and provide feedback to the search committee.   • Become an AS-L Faculty Fellow: All full-time, tenure-track faculty interested in engaging their students in community-based learning should become a winter 2009 Academic Service-Learning Faculty Fellow. AS-L is a teaching methodology that engages students in community service as a means of helping them gain a deeper understanding of course objectives, helps them aquire new knowledge, and engages them in civic activity. An AS-L Faculty Fellow would receive one course released for Winter 2009, attend a weekly two-hour, semester long seminar; and revise a course syllabus which integrates an AS-L experience.   • Trick-or-Treat Trot: The Student Dietetic Association and the Road Running Emus honor Laura Dickinson's memory in the Trick-or-Treat Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk and Student Safety and Health Fair on the EMU campus, Saturday, Nov. 1. A large portion of the proceeds will benefit the "Share Laura's Hope" Foundation set up by her parents to benefit orphans of AIDS victims in Africa. Get some exercise, have some fun, dress up if you want, and learn more about how to stay healthy and safe on campus, while letting Laura's parents know you care.   • Continuing Education Scholarships available: Four Continuing Education Scholarships are available for students studying through Continuing Education. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any of the programs offered through Continuing Education during the winter or spring 2009 terms are eligible. The application deadline is Nov. 1, 2008.   • EMU alumni host "Dinner with 12 Strangers": Join EMU alumni for a series of unique dinners the weekend of Nov. 14-16 in the homes of local alumni. Guests will include EMU alumni, students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of the "Dinner with 12 Strangers" program is to create an informal environment for EMU students to connect with alumni and faculty, and to strengthen the University network though new friendships.   • Rock the Convo: Hard rockers Avenged Sevenfold and Buckcherry, with special guest Shinedown & Saving Abel, perform Friday, Nov. 21, 6 p.m., Convocation Center.   • Faculty/staff campaign approaching: The annual EMU Faculty and Staff Campaign is almost here. Please keep an eye on your e-mail in-box for this year's appeal. The campaign tremendous support from our online appeal last year with a total of $1,088,070 given during the campaign. Thanks to all of our generous faculty and staff for making a difference in our academic community.   • Rest Stop Dedication for Don Anderson: The dedication of the Eastern Michigan University Rest Stop in memory of Donald J. Anderson will take place Monday, Nov. 3, 10:30 a.m. Don was the director of the Office of Access Services at EMU from 2002-2007 and was a tireless advocate for the full inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society. Those attending the dedication ceremony should gather at 10:30 a.m. at the north entrance of the Student Center. The group will move to the Rest Stop location, along a popular walkway from the First-Year Center to the Towers, just north of the Student Center. Refreshments will immediately follow in Suite 300 of the Student Center. Parking is available in the Student Center Lot off Oakwood. For questions, please call 487-5493.
  • Open enrollment period for healthcare scheduled Nov. 3-14: Eastern Michigan University's open enrollment period for healthcare will run from Monday, Nov. 3, through Friday, Nov. 14. New coverage will be effective Jan. 1, 2009. The open enrollment booklet has been mailed to each employee's campus department. Please consult the booklet for specific information regarding the healthcare options. If you wish to change your healthcare option or decide to opt out of EMU's plan, now is the time to make that decision. Complete the applicable enrollment or healthcare waiver form provided in the booklet. The booklet also is available on the HR Web site at http://www.emich.edu/hr/benefits/openenroll2008.pdf

This year, police sergeants must select a PPO option during this open enrollment period by completing the enrollment form in the booklet. Staff and faculty also must verify the IRS dependency of their overage dependent children during this time. Forms indicating whether the child (ren) is to be continued or not must be returned to the Benefits Office by Nov. 14.   • HPHP Program Review: The School of Health Promotion and Human Performance, one of the Integrated Program Review and Continuous Improvement Cycle's test departments, has completed its program reviews for 2007-2008 and invites the campus community to provide input and feedback to complete the review process. All interested faculty and staff are invited to review and comment on the HPHP program reviews electronically, today through Nov. 9. To access the HPHP program review report, log in to my.emich, click on the REPORTS tab, and click on the IRIM Reports. From the list, choose "How To Access the Program Review Campus Comment Module."
