  • Board of Regents meeting: The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents meets Tuesday, Nov. 18. The schedule is as follows: Athletic Affairs Committee, 9:30-10:15 a.m., 205 Welch; Faculty Affairs Committee, 9:30-10:15 a.m., 205 Welch Hall; Student Affairs Committee, 10:30-11:15 a.m.; Educational Policies Committee, 10:30-11:15 a.m.; Finance and Audit Committee, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; 201 Welch; and regular meeting and communications section, 1-1:45 p.m. Regents also will attend the science complex groundbreaking, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. For more information, call Jackie Kurtz, 487-2410.

  • Science complex groundbreaking: Eastern Michigan University will break ground on its new $90 million science complex Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 2:30 p.m., near the east side of Mark Jefferson. Speakers for the groundbreaking will include: Thomas Sidlik, chair of the EMU Board of Regents; EMU President Susan Martin and Don Loppnow, provost and executive vice president. The project will involve a renovation and modernization of existing space in the Mark Jefferson Building, which was originally constructed in 1967. The project's first phase will create a 72,000-square-foot addition to the existing structure. The second phase will renovate the existing structure and focus on improving mechanical and electrical systems, structural improvements, a new roof and site improvements. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2011. After the groundbreaking, a reception will follow in the McKenny Hall Ballroom. Parking will be available in the McKenny Parking Lot off Cross Street.   • President Martin to be inaugurated Nov. 20: Dr. Susan W. Martin will be invested as the 22nd president of Eastern Michigan University during inaugural ceremonies Thursday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m., in Pease Auditorium. She is the first female president at EMU in its 159-year history. A reception and celebration will immediately follow in the EMU Student Center Ballroom. Parking will be available at the Student Center with continuous shuttle service, starting at 10 a.m., that will provide round-trip service to the ceremony at Pease Auditorium.   • Cellar Roots Week: Cellar Roots, Eastern Michigan University's literary and visual arts journal, dedicates this week to the arts. Check out "George Legrady: Cell Tango," an interactive art gallery on campus Tuesday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Ford Gallery. Send your cell phone photos to pics@celltango.org to contribute to the gallery. EcoArts Night is scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7-9 p.m., room 320, Student Center. Make writing utensil holders and candy jars from recycled material. Materials will be provided. Light refreshments will be served. Open Mic Night is scheduled at Bombadil's Cafe, Thursday, Nov. 20. The event begins at 6 p.m. with poetry and music. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided. Bombadil's is located at 217 W. Michigan Ave. in Ypsilanti. Cellar Roots and Dogzplot present "Flash Fiction Slam!" Friday, Nov. 21, 7 p.m., room 330, Student Center. Light refreshments will be served.   • AQIP Action Project prpoosals due: roposals for AQIP Action Projects are due before the end of the day Friday, Nov. 21. Proposal information was distributed by e-mail to all employees several weeks ago.   • Toledo Zoo Holiday Lights: Experience holiday magic at the Toledo Zoo as EMU alumni and friends visit "Toledo Zoo Holiday Lights," Saturday, Nov. 22. Enjoy warm beverages and cookies while touring the amazing displays featuring 1 million lights with more than 200 animal images, carolers, model trains and Santa Claus. Children of all ages are welcome at this holiday event. The cost is $7 per person and includes zoo admission and parking, admission to EMU's hospitality station and a small gift for children 12 and under. Reservations are required by Tuesday, Nov. 18.   • Faculty and Staff campaign: The annual EMU Faculty and Staff Campaign is upon us. Please keep an eye on your e-mail in-box for this year's appeal. The campaign received tremendous support from the EMU Foundation's online appeal last year with a total of $1,088,070 given during the campaign. Thanks to all of EMU's generous faculty and staff for making a difference in our academic community.   • Bowen stairs work: The staircase and sidewalk to the west of Bowen Field House are shut down. This shutdown is necessary to allow the installation of a new handicapped-accessible ramp in the area. Pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk adjacent to the parking structure and the sidewalk across West Circle Drive. The sidewalk and stairs should be re-opened by Friday, Nov. 28.
  • Holman Learning Center needs tutors: Holman Learning Center is currently hiring tutors in a number of subjects. Holman Learning Center offers flexible hours and competitive wages.   • Seasons greetings: President Susan Martin and Dr. Larry Martin are inviting all EMU employees to University House (790 North Hewitt Road) for a reception to celebrate the holidays.
