EMU's MLK Celebration includes week full of events

"Justice For All?" is the theme of the 2006 celebration of Martin Luther King Day at Eastern Michigan University. The campus celebration, now in its 20th year, runs Jan. 12-16 with many events occurring throughout campus.

Keynote speaker Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page will highlight the celebration.

Page will deliver remarks at the President's luncheon, scheduled Monday, Jan. 16, noon, at the Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest. Tickets for the luncheon are $32 for individuals and $15 for students. The keynote address follows at 3 p.m. in Pease Auditorium. Admission is free.

Page's law career began during his NFL-playing days when he had the foresight to attend law school at the University of Minnesota at the height of his football career. When he retired from the game in 1981, he went to work for a Minnesota law firm before being appointed special assistant attorney general in Minnesota. In 1987, he became assistant attorney general and, in 1993, he became associate justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Page is now a defender of equal education for children. In 1998, he established the Page Education Foundation to provide college tuition for underprivileged children. He also has been the recipient of three honorary degrees and numerous athletic and humanitarian awards.

"This marks the 20th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Celebration," said Jessica "Decky" Alexander, associate professor of communication and theatre arts. "It was initially entitled Humanitarian Day and, even though the day has evolved into a week and into a myriad of the more artistic, it is still about the core of Dr. King's vision and humanity. These events, which span over a week, are opportunities for the campus community to engage in dialogue and discussion about equality, justice, injustice, truth and reconciliation in the community."
