  • Loppnow - safety and security

    responders to scenes where time is critical

    Safety and security forums set: Eastern Michigan University will host two open forums about campus safety and security. The forums are scheduled Monday, Jan. 28, 12:30-2 p.m., room 330, Student Center; and Thursday, Jan. 31, 5:30-7 p.m., room 310B, Student Center. Don Loppnow, executive vice president for EMU, will lead a team of University representatives to provide updated information about safety and security, and answer questions.   • Lab safety training for faculty/staff: The Department of Risk Management is conducting training sessions on providing adequate supervision of students in laboratories. The training sessions are appropriate for any faculty or staff member who supervises students in a lab setting where there is potential for injury. One-hour sessions are scheduled Jan. 22, noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.; and Jan. 23, 9 a.m, 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., Halle Library Auditorium.   • Communicators Conference scheduled Jan. 23: Learn more about Eastern Michigan University's new identity system, branding and advertising campaigns, and tips for more effectively getting your message out. Attend EMU's first University Communicators Conference, Wednesday, Jan. 23, 12:45-4:30 p.m., at the Student Center. It's the perfect opportunity for meeting fellow communicators and learning about EMU's integrated marketing and communications strategies. Ellen Hill Zeringue, director of marketing for the Detroit Tigers, will be the keynote speaker, followed by breakout sessions on communications, marketing, Web communications, university logos and identity standards, and photography, videography and multimedia services.     MAD discussion: John Hett, editor and publisher of the Journal of Madness, will speak about the history of Alfred E. Neuman and on works from his extensive collection during an art lecture Wednesday, Jan. 23, 7:30-8:30 p.m., Halle Library Auditorium. Al Feldstein, the editor of MAD magazine for almost thirty years, will talk about his decision to showcase the character and on Alfred's subsequent appearances in the magazine.   • Remembering Olga: A celebration of Olga Nelson's life and gifts to the campus community will take place Saturday, Jan. 26, 2 p.m., room 201, Porter Building. Following the service, there will be a reception in the lounge. As a tribute to Olga's love of life and joyful spirit, those attending are asked to wear bright colors.     AT THE NET: The EMU women's tennis team was
    picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American
    Conference this season.

    Women's tennis picked to finish fourth in MAC: The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was picked to finish fourth in the preseason Mid-American Conference poll released by the league office Jan. 16. The Eagles return 2007 MAC Player of the Year Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magnus Gymnasium) who finished 7-0 in MAC play last year. The Eagles opened their season Jan. 19 at Indiana State University.
