"The program is targeted toward individuals who are certified in secondary English and who have at least two years of classroom experience," said Cathy Fleischer, an EMU professor of English. "The goals for those entering the program might be (1) informing their pedagogy and improving their own teaching; (2) increasing their knowledge base of issues in English education in order to become a classroom/school leader or an English/language arts curriculum specialist; (3) gaining knowledge and practice in scholarship of English studies to continue on to a Ph.D. program; and (4) pursuing classroom-based research in literacy studies and or writing for publication."

The 30-credit hour program is scheduled to begin in fall 2008. The plan is for 10 students in the first cohort.

The total cost of the program is estimated to be about $1,000.
