The following are news briefs about important
activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.
- Learn
plans for new Mark Jefferson Science Complex: Faculty
and staff are invited to attend the unveiling of plans
for the new Mark Jefferson Science Complex Tuesday,
Jan. 23, 11 a.m., 205 Welch. The new complex will be
a regional science center that focuses on science education;
will provide more opportunities for undergraduate and
graduate research; and will make a greater impact on
teacher education. For more information, call University

- You can still
donate to United Way campaign: Eastern
Michigan University raised more than $106,000 during
its recent United Way campaign. However, there is
still an opportunity for EMU to reach and surpass
its initial goal of $120,000. Washtenaw United Way
has launched an emergency campaign through Wednesday,
Jan. 24, to raise a countywide shortfall of $500,000
for this year. Donations are needed to maintain
current funding levels for the county's United Way
programs. For EMU employees who would still like
the opportunity to donate to United Way, please contact

- General Education advising
training: General Education Advising Training
sessions are open to all faculty, staff, students and administrators
interested in learning the specifics of the new General Education
Program in preparation for advising students. R.S.V.P.
is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome if seating is available.
Session 1 is scheduled Tuesdays, Jan. 23 and 30, 3-5 p.m.,
300 Halle Library; Session 2 is scheduled Wednesdays, Jan.
24 and 31, 3-5 p.m., 300 Halle Library; Session 3 is scheduled
Tuesdays, March 13 and 20, 3-5 p.m., Halle Library Auditorium;
or Wednesdays, Mar. 14 and 21, 3-5 p.m., Halle Library

- Weight Watchers at Work: Registration
for a 12-week session of Weight Watchers at Work begins
Friday, Jan. 26, noon, 401 Pierce Hall. Meetings are Fridays
at noon. The cost of the program is $135. There must be
15 registered participants to run the session. If you are

LITTLE MUSICIANS: EMU's Music Academy
presents early childhood music classes,
beginning
Jan. 25. |
- Early Childhood
Music Classes: EMU's Community Music
Academy presents early childhood music classes. Classes
for infant/toddlers (0-3 years of age) begin Thursday,
Jan. 25, and are scheduled 10:05-10:45 a.m. Thursdays
for a period of 11 weeks in the Alexander Building.
Classes for preschool children (3-5 years old) also
begin Jan. 25 and run from 11:05-11:45 a.m. Thursdays
in the Alexander Building. Classes provide informal,
structured guidance in music. For more information,

- The Tempest: EMU
Theatre presents "The Tempest" directed
by Lee Stille. Greed and treachery have taken over and
the world is in disarray. The forces of nature are summoned
and a tempest rages as wrongs are righted and chaos becomes
harmony in this Shakespearean classic. Performances are
scheduled Thursday, Jan. 25; Friday, Jan. 26, 8 p.m.;
and Jan. 27, 5 and 9 p.m., Sponberg Theatre. Tickets
are $6 and can be purchased by calling 487-1221.
- Light therapy available: During
the fall/winter months, if you are feeling sad, anxious
or having "empty" moods; are less energetic,
eating and sleeping excessively; or gaining weight, you
may have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Light therapy
may help you feel better. Counseling Services provides
FREE light therapy for the EMU community. For questions,
