GET YOUR PASSPORT: Academic
Programs Abroad hosts a
passport clinic Jan. 30, 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m., room 310, in the
Student Center.

  • Academic Programs Abroad hosts passport clinic: Join Academic Programs Abroad Wednesday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 310 Student Center, to get your passport application processed. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend. Bring your identification, have your passport photos taken, and get ready to travel. U.S. postal officials will take the pictures, accept payment by check or cash, verify and expedite your passport application. Easy, fast and fun.   • Safety and security forum scheduled: Eastern Michigan University will host an open forum about campus safety and security Thursday, Jan. 31, 5:30-7 p.m., room 310B, Student Center. Don Loppnow, executive vice president for EMU, will lead a team of University representatives to provide updated information about safety and security, and answer questions.   • EMU's presidential search progresses: The Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC) held its fourth meeting Jan. 17 as it continued its search for Eastern Michigan University's next president.

The 12-member committee, chaired by Regents Jim Stapleton and Roy Wilbanks, met to review some of the candidates who made the initial screening. Candidates will remain anonymous until the Board releases the finalists' names.

The Compass Group Ltd., an executive search firm hired by the EMU Board of Regents, will accept applications through Feb. 1.

"We are impressed with the breadth and depth of experiences we've received from the various applicants and nominations. It's obvious that this important position has caught the attention of so many viable applicants," said Paul Czamanske, president and CEO, Compass Group Ltd. "The diversity of the potential candidates gives us confidence that the process is working well. We are also impressed with the dedication and commitment level of the PSAC."

  • Call for student nominees: The Office for Alumni Relations and SOAR (Student Organization for Alumni Relations) launches SOAR Recruitment 2008, a nomination drive running through Friday, Feb. 1. SOAR is a group of student leaders that serves as the link between students, faculty, staff and alumni. The EMU community is encouraged to nominate deserving students for this unique opportunity. Ideal SOAR candidates possess excellent leadership and communication skills, and have the ability to relate to both students and alumni as they work to help further the goals of the university by promoting pride, loyalty and tradition. FOCUS ON FREEDOM: The
National Underground Railroad
Freedom Center is one of the
stops on the Cincinnati Urban
Crawl Feb. 2.

  • Cincinnati Urban Crawl: Journey along the Ohio River to pay homage to the fallen passengers of The National Underground Railroad, then walk the banks of Newport on the levee exploring the cultural highlights of Cincinnati, Ohio, during the Cincinnati Urban Crawl Saturday, Feb. 2. This city's historic sites will send a shiver up your spine and instill an appreciation for different cultures and customs. Tickets are $25 for EMU students and $75 for faculty/staff/non-EMU students. The cost includes a boxed lunch, transportation and admission to The National Underground Freedom Center. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. Feb. 2.   • RAD classes teach self defense: The next set of Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD) classes are scheduled Feb. 5, 12 and 19, and March 4 (simulation). The free classes will take place 6-9 p.m., in the Village Commons. RAD is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. The RAD system is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.   • CEO Conference on campus Feb. 15: The Center for Entrepreneurship at Eastern Michigan University presents the 11th Annual Midwest Regional CEO Conference Friday, Feb. 15, EMU Student Center. The Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization of EMU will host the event, and students and faculty are invited to listen to speakers focusing on "success stories" from local entrepreneurs. The Business Plan Competition also will take place at the conclusion of the conference, which includes lunch. The event is free, but registration is required.   • Art Faculty Exhibition continues: University Gallery presents the Art Faculty Exhibition through Feb. 15. The event is free and open to the public. The annual event features the artwork of both full-time and adjunct faculty members. Photography, painting, watercolor, printmaking, drawing, graphic design, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, metalsmithing and mixed media are represented.   • English help for you or your students: The International Student Resource Center (ISRC) is now open for the winter semester. The center offers one-on-one tutoring for EMU international students who need extra help with their English language skills.
