Eastern Michigan University's involvement with charter schools in the state of Michigan recently reached its 11th anniversary. The Charter Schools Office at EMU was created as part of the former University Relations in fall 1995. By June 1996, EMU's first two charter schools were approved by the Board of Regents. The Ann Arbor Learning Community was honored during 2006-07 as one of the 53 best charter schools in the United States by the Washington-based Center for Education Reform.
