Six years ago, I started working in EMU's housing office. Four years later, I applied for my current position in the event planning office just after my father died. I wasn't sure how I would handle a new job on top of losing my dad. But the job seemed so perfect for me, I couldn't pass it up.
On a day-to-day basis, I am always working with students, but I also plan large events for the entire campus. The Thanksgiving buffet is one of those events and another semiannual event is the Student Appreciation Luncheon, which allows the staff and faculty to recognize their graduating student employees.
EMU is different from larger universities — it's better. My entire family is comfortable here. My children attended the Rec/IM's summer Fun Camp for seven years. My daughters felt so at ease here that they had no qualms about entering the president's office to find a penny during one of the camp's scavenger hunts. I can't imagine a larger university being as open to the community as is Eastern.
My husband has worked more than twice as long as I have for a larger university, and our children are still more comfortable at Eastern. This University is a great place to work. But more importantly, it's a great place for my family.
