Office of Nutrition plans activities to celebrate National Nutrition Month

From the Office of Nutrition Services

Attention, all lovers of food, health and free samples. March is National Nutrition Month and Eastern Michigan University's Office of Nutrition Services presents "Eat Right" on Campus.

Festivities kick off Feb. 18 when the Office of Nutrition Services (ONS) hosts an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the lobby outside of 108 Roosevelt Hall. Activities will include fresh stir-fry samples provided by Chef Tom Murray; a taste test of coffee and sandwiches offered from Beezy's Café; Zingerman's Deli, of Ann Arbor, will provide food samples; and employees from Whole Foods Market will be on hand to pass out free samples.

Snow Health Center nurses will be available to provide free blood pressure readings, and the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage will provide free, relaxing massages. Janet Simpson, life coach and sports nutritionist; Alice Jo Rainville, an expert in school nutrition and food service; and Diane Reynolds, who has extensive experience in community-based nutrition — all registered dietitians at EMU — will be available to answer any nutrition questions.

The purpose of National Nutrition Month, as stated by the American Dietetic Association, is to "focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits." National Nutrition Month has been celebrated all over the country since 1980.

Additional celebratory events will take place on campus during March.

Jenna Wunder, a registered dietitian from The University of Michigan's Department of Integrative Medicine, will discuss the University of Michigan Healing Foods Pyramid March 11, noon to 2 p.m., Roosevelt Auditorium.

Of all the events planned, Nancy Parker, a registered dietitian and supervisor of EMU's Office of Nutrition Services, said she is looking forward to this session the most.

"I am excited to hear her talk about the evolution of the Healing Foods Pyramid because it was developed at the University of Michigan's Department of Integrative Medicine," Parker said.

Whole Foods Market will provide healthy refreshments at the lecture.

Chef Tom Murray will dazzle the audience with his culinary skills on the Student Center Stage March 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Murray will demonstrate how to prepare and cook fresh, flavorful, and healthy vegetables. Free samples also will be provided.

For those unsure if there are any healthy dining options on campus, please attend the healthy eating campus tour. Join dietetics students Wednesday, March 25, at 1 p.m., near the Student Center Stage, for a tour of numerous dining facilities, which offer healthy meal options. Learn some tips and tricks for eating out, including fast food restaurants, and taste more free food samples.

These events, funded through a grant by the Southeastern Michigan Dietetic Association (SEMDA) and the Office of Nutrition Services, are open to students, faculty, staff and the public. To attend Jenna Wunder's lecture and/or the healthy eating campus tour, please RSVP to the Office of Nutrition Services by Wednesday, March 4, by calling (734) 487-6572 or e-mail chhs_nutrition@emich.edu — This article was edited by Ron Podell.
