Faculty, staff need Eagle Cards to enter campus buildings with card-access system after hours

By Pamela Young

The physical plant, Department of Public Safety (DPS)and ICT continue to upgrade security measures on campus

As of Feb. 13, the physical plant has re-keyed 28 buildings. The remaining buildings — Central Stores, the Sculpture Studio, King Hall, the Rec/IM, the Lake House and the Terrestrial and Aquatics building — will be re-keyed to a single access point this week.

When a building is closed, faculty and staff can use their current key to access a single exterior door — after hours and on weekends — until the card access system is activated. Once the card access system is operational, authorized faculty and staff MUST use their Eagle Card faculty/staff ID to access a building after hours and on weekends.

ACCESS GRANTED: This mock
demonstration outside Boone Hall will
soon become a familiar process on
campus, for those needing access to
buildings after hours. Faculty and
staff are encouraged to get their Eagle
Cards, which will be used to grant
access to campus facilities.

Campus keys will not work on outside building doors once the access program is in place.

New ID cards are available at the Eagle Card office in 21 McKenny Union. The card features your new ID number and a picture of the sculpture in front of Mark Jefferson. If you have not visited the Eagle Card office since August 2005 to have a new picture taken, please visit the Eagle Card office soon. Bring a driver's license or photo ID with you in order to verify your identity.

In order for a Distance Learner student to receive an Eagle OneCard, they should call the Eagle Card office and identify that they are a Distance Learner. The Eagle Card staff will verify registration and the student's address, and order an ID card for the student. The Distance Learner will receive his or her Eagle OneCard in the mail, with a photo of the world on it, in place of the student's picture. The student needs to go to www.EMUEagleOne.com site and activate the ID card in order to obtain access to any of the student privileges and to identify how they wish to receive any financial refunds from the University.

The Eagle Card office is open Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For questions, call 487-3176.

Students can use their Eagle One ID card (with the master card logo) for access to a building, if their faculty or department sponsor and the building administrator have authorized it.

Building administrators will notify department heads and deans by e-mail when their card access program is activated. Deans and department heads will then notify faculty and staff. The building administrator is responsible for programming authorized ID cards for after hour's access.

If you don't know your building administrator, please contact DPS at 487-1222.

If your ID is lost or stolen, call DPS and your department head immediately, so the card can be deactivated from the system. You'll need to obtain a new ID from the Eagle Card office and have your building administrator reactivate your access.

When the program is activated, faculty, staff and administrators should return building keys to public safety for recycling. You can return them through campus mail or drop them off at DPS, located at Oakwood and Structure Drive. If your key currently opens both the outside door and an internal building door, keep your key because the access program won't affect internal doors.

Emergency assistance stations

Progress continues on the closed-circuit TV systems and the emergency assistance stations in Mark Jefferson and Strong Hall. Work should be completed by March 1.

Advisory committees

The Technical and Security Advisory Committees continue to meet to oversee implementation of the card access program, the closed-circuit TV and the emergency assistance stations.

The Security Advisory Committee's next meeting is Feb. 17. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to bring any questions or concerns to their representative.

Keeping you and EMU safe

University Communications and the Department of Public Safety, as part of a continuing effort to increase personal safety awareness, offer the following weekly safety tip:

Be alert to your surroundings, especially when it's dark. It's hard to pay attention to your surroundings while talking on your cell phone or while wearing headphones.
