The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.
- Federal grant campaign recognized: Please join U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, EMU Provost and Executive Vice President Don Loppnow, and Chief Government Relations Officer Freman Hendrix for a reception to honor Eastern Michigan University’s successful 2007-2008 federal grant campaign. Thanks to the hard work of many in the University community, EMU has been awarded in excess of $3.75 million in federal competitive and earmark grants to expand services and increase EMU's level of institutional research. The reception is scheduled Wednesday, Feb. 20, room 300, EMU Student Center. A reception begins at 1:30 p.m. with a program at 2 p.m. Appetizers and light refreshments will be served. - Candidate open forums:,The University community is invited to meet the candidates for the newly created position of director of training and professional development at the following scheduled open forums: James Gallaher, General Motors, Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2:15-3 p.m., Welch Board Room; and Patricia Harris, Eastern Michigan University, Thursday, Feb. 21, 3:15-4 p.m., Welch Board Room. - Statewide cultural workshops scheduled: The Michigan Crime Victim Services Commission has partnered with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes to offer a statewide series of workshops on cultural competence and hate crimes. The "Building Cultural Competence" workshop is offered Wednesday, Feb. 20, 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., Weber's Inn, Ann Arbor; and Thursday, Feb. 21, 8 a.m., Weber's Inn, Ann Arbor. The four-hour participatory workshop is designed to enhance understanding of different cultural groups. It is designed to assist participants to recognize, understand and control their personal biases, and interact more effectively with colleagues and customers across cultural boundaries. The "Hate Crime 101" workshop is scheduled Thursday, Feb. 21, 1 p.m., Weber's Inn, Ann Arbor. This two-hour workshop is designed to help individuals understand, define and respond to hate crimes. - ElderQuest program reception: The EMU ElderQuest Program will host a reception for people 60 years and older who are interested in volunteering at the Art Gallery. - Senior B.F.A. Exhibition continues: The Ford Gallery presents the first-ever Senior B.F.A. Exhibition, through March 6. The exhibition will display the work of art majors graduating during the 2007-08 academic year. There is no cost to attend. Ford Gallery is open Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information, contact Gallery Program Director Larry Newhouse, 487-4065.
- Biology Program Review seeks campus comment: The biology department, one of the Integrated Program Review and Continuous Improvement Cycle’s test departments, has completed its program reviews for 2007-2008 and now invites the campus community to provide input and feedback to complete the review process. All interested faculty and staff are invited to review and comment on the biology program reviews electronically, via the REPORTS tab on my.emich today through March 5. Instructions for accessing and commenting on the reviews can be obtained by clicking the following link: How to Access the Campus Comment Module. - Student Gold Medallion Award nominations sought: The Student Gold Medallion Awards, celebrating excellence in leadership and service by student organizations and their advisers at EMU, seeks nominations under an array of awards categories. Nominations are simple to submit online. The deadline is Monday, March 10. Read more about the award categories and how to submit nominations by going to www.emich.edu/goldmedallion. - Save the date: All staff and faculty who have service anniversaries in 2008 of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service should please mark their calendars for Tuesday, March 25, as the University celebrates its annual Employee Recognition Program. This annual event takes place during the University's Salute to Excellence Week. It honors staff and faculty who have achieved these consecutive years of service. A breakfast and special program is scheduled March 25, Student Center Ballroom. During the program, these employees

- Eat, Drink and Be Larry: The man who added the catchphrases, "Git-R-Done" and "Lord, I Apologize," is coming to EMU. Dan Whitney, known better as "Larry the Cable Guy," performs his stand-up brand of comedy Saturday, April 19, 8 p.m., Convocation Center. Tickets cost $42.75 (plus applicable fees). Tickets for $32.75 and a $20 student price with student ID have been added. For tickets, call 487-2282, or stop by the Convocation Center.
- Summer housing positions: The EMU Upward Bound Program seeks applicants for peer adviser positions for the 2008 Summer Academy. Responsible, reliable, energetic and creative individuals to provide programming support and supervision are needed. The positions offer salary, room and board, and the opportunity to chaperone field trips. Education majors are encouraged to apply. - Flexible Spending Account deadline for 2007: The 2007 Flexible Spending Account calendar year for medical and dependent care expenses ended Dec. 31, 2007. Any receipts for claim expenses incurred as of Dec. 31, 2007, must be submitted for reimbursement by March 31, 2008. This date is set by IRS regulations. No claims for the previous year can be submitted beyond this date. Reimbursement forms are available on the Human Resources Web site under HR Forms or in the Benefits Office, 140 McKenny Hall. If you have any questions about eligible expenses, call Ceridian Benefits Services, (877) 799-8820, or go to their Web site at www.ceridian-benefits.com. The hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST. It is urgent that anyone who submits receipts by fax needs to make sure that a confirmation of the fax is received. Make sure you keep copies of all receipts when submitted by mail. The fax number for submission of receipts is 888-342-5111. Double check the Web site to make sure the receipts have been received and are being processed. Because of the increased calls, you may experience delays in getting to customer service.The E
