The following are news briefs about important
activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.
- Food Show: The
2009 Food Show, which annually takes place at Eastern
Eateries, is scheduled Wednesday, March 11, 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. Enjoy free food and beverages. Sample some of
the foods served throughout Dining Services and talk
firsthand with various company representatives. The event
is open to the University community and friends. Eastern
Eateries is located between Phelps-Sellers and Walton-Putnam
residence halls, across the street from Pray-Harrold.

- CHHS dean candidate interviews: Presentations
by candidates for the open EMU College of Health and Human
Services dean position are scheduled as follows: John
Ronnau, Thursday, March 12, 1:30-2:30 p.m., room 108, Marshall;
and Thomas Birk, Wednesday, March 18, 2-3 p.m., room 203,

MONKEYING AROUND: Guerrilla Girls on Tour
perform "Feminists Are Funny" as part of
Women's
History Month on campus.

- Guerrilla Girls on Tour: Guerrilla
Girls on Tour, a New York City-based theatre collective
and internationally renowned touring company, will be
on campus to present "Feminists Are Funny," Thursday,
March 12, 7-8:30 p.m., Sponberg Theatre. The performance
addresses the lack of opportunities for women and people

- Relay For Life: Are
you looking for a way to make a difference? How about starting
in your own community? Please join the American Cancer
Society's Relay For Life of Ypsilanti Kick-Off event Wednesday,
March 12, 7 p.m., at the Ypsilanti District Library on
Whittaker Road. Learn how you can help us celebrate cancer
survivors, remember those we have lost and help those who
are fighting for their lives. The 24-hour Relay will take
place, beginning at 10 a.m. June 27, at Riverside Park,
Depot Town. Teams are forming now. For more information,

- Michigan Collegiate
Job Fair: Eastern Michigan University
and the Michigan Association of Colleges and Employers
hosts the Michigan Collegiate Job Fair (MCJF) Friday,
March 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Burton Manor Banquet
and Conference Center, 27777 Schoolcraft Road in
Livonia. The MCJF is primarily targeted toward new
college graduates and recent alumni seeking entry-level,
professional employment. More than 100 employers are
expected to attend. Registration is $20

WOMEN'S KEYNOTE: Bettye
Collier-Thomas,
the keynote
speaker for Women's History
Month,
will present "The Nexus:
Women, Religion and Civil
Rights." |
- Women's History Month
keynote: Bettye Collier-Thomas, the
keynote speaker for Women's History Month, presents
her lecture, "The
Nexus: Women, Religion and Civil Rights," Wednesday,
March 18, 7-8:30 p.m., room 202, Porter Auditorium. Collier-Thomas
is a professor of history at Temple University and
a Woodrow Wilson Fellow during 2008-2009. She is an
Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer
for 2008-2011. Collier-Thomas founded and served as the
first executive director of the Bethune Museum and Archives
National Historic Site, in Washington, D.C. She received
a Conservation Service Award from the U.S. Department of
the Interior for her work. Her publications include "Daughters
of Thunder: Black Women Preachers and Their Sermons," and "Sisters
in the Struggle: African-American Women in the Civil Rights-Black
Power Movement." Collier-Thomas is currently working
on "Jesus, Jobs and Justice: A History of African-American
Women and Religion."
- National Survey of Student
Engagement: EMU is participating in
the National Survey of Student Engagement. Selected
freshmen and seniors should have already received
a survey invitation e-mail from Don Loppnow, provost
and executive vice president. A follow-up e-mail
about this survey will be sent out soon. The survey
will help EMU learn more about current students’ academic
activities and experiences on campus. It also will
help EMU to provide improved educational opportunities
for future students. Selected students are encouraged
to take 15 minutes to complete the survey. The
suvey is accessible through the e-mail invitation
or at www.nssesurvey.org
- Student Essay contest: Eastern
Michigan University celebrates 160 years of putting "Education
First" Saturday, March 28. To celebrate EMU's legacy in
education, the University will host a student essay contest
(excludes EMU faculty and staff). The essay topic is "How
I Make Education First in My Life." Entries must be at
least 500 words, typed and double-spaced. Essays must
be submitted to the Office of Marketing and Communications,
15 Welch Hall, no later than Monday, March 16. The top
three essays will be selected as winners and each will
receive a $160 gift certificate from the EMU Bookstore.
Entries will be judged Tuesday, March 17, by the associate
vice president of marketing and communications. Upon
selection, winners will be notified by telephone. Winners
will appear in an announcement in EMU Today and will
be honored at an upcoming University House reception
hosted by EMU President Susan Martin. For more information,

- Meals on Wheels
Spring Fling: Enjoy a delicious buffet
meal, merry music and fantastic service at the annual
Celebrity Benefit Dinner Thursday, March 19, from
5-9 p.m., Bentley's, at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti
at Eagle Crest. All tips collected will go directly
to Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels to help deliver meals to
local homebound individuals in Ypsilanti and the
surrounding townships. EMU celebrity wait staff/hosts/hostesses
are Morell Boone, Paul Kuwik, Bruce Moses, Vicki
Reaume and Cathie McClure. For more information,

- School of Technology
Studies Program Review: The School of
Technology Studies, one of the Academic Review and
Continuous Improvement Cycle's departments, has completed
its program reviews for 2008-2009 and invites the
campus community to provide input and feedback to
complete the review process. All interested faculty
and staff are invited to review and comment on the
School of Technology Studies program reviews electronically
through Friday, March 20. To access the School of
Technology Studies program review report, login to
my.emich, click on the REPORTS tab, and click on
the IRIM Reports. From the list, choose “How to Provide Comments
for the Academic Review and Continuous Improvement

- Employee recognition: All
staff and faculty, who have service anniversaries in
2009 of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service,
should please mark their calendars for Tuesday, March
24, as the University celebrates its annual Employee
Recognition Program. This annual event takes place during
the University's Salute to Excellence Week. It honors
staff and faculty who have achieved these consecutive years of service.
A breakfast and special program is scheduled March 24 in
the Student Center Ballroom. During the program, these
employees will receive a brochure from which to order their
own individual gift. Invitations and a more detailed

- Explore Eastern: "Renew Your View of EMU" during

- EMU Latino Alumni Association
scholarships: The EMU Latino Alumni Association's Fall 2009-Winter 2010
alumni scholarships are now available to be picked up at
the Center for Multicultural Affairs office, room 358,
Student Center. Applications are due Monday, April 6, by
5 p.m. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. To
request an application via e-mail, please e-mail emu_latinoalumni@yahoo.com.
