The following are news briefs about important activities and events happening at Eastern Michigan University.

  • Open forums with CAS dean candidates scheduled: Six candidates for dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will participate in open forums for the campus community. The schedule is as follows: James Schiffer, professor and head, department of English, Northern Michigan University, Thursday, March 13; Carol Richardson, professor, University of Michigan, Monday, March 17; Robert Ulin, professor and chair, department of anthropology, Western Michigan University, Wednesday, March 19; Thomas Venner, professor and head, art department, Eastern Michigan University, Tuesday, March 25; and Jude Nixon, director, The Honors College, Oakland University, Monday, March 31. Yolanda Niemann, special assistant to the dean, Washington State University, interviewed March 10. All forums are scheduled 3:30-4:30 p.m., with the first five in 201 Welch Hall; and the final candidate, on March 31, meeting in room G03, Halle Library.   • Michigan Women Studies Association Conference: The EMU Women and Gender Studies Program hosts the Michigan Women Studies Association Conference March 14-15, EMU Student Center. Keynote speakers will present a conversation among four generations of feminism Friday, March 14, with papers and panels scheduled Saturday, March 15.   • Budget available: Business and finance have made the General Fund, 2003-07 budget vs. actual report available.   • Special Board of Regents meeting scheduled March 14: A special EMU Board of Regents meeting is scheduled Friday, March 14, 4:30 p.m., Dining Room 1, Eagle Crest Golf Club. Items of business include a recommendation for a collective bargaining agreement between EMU and AFSCME Council 25 Local 3866; and a recommendation for a resolution authorizing the issuance and delivery of general revenue bonds. Pistons - Eastern Excursion

 

  • Eastern Excursion to Pistons' game: Cheer on the boys in blue (and red) and get a chance to see the Detroit Pistons take on the San Antonio Spurs Friday, March 14. Tickets for EMU students are $40, and $60 for faculty/staff/non-EMU students. Tickets include transportation and admission. For tickets, contact the EMU Student Center Ticket Office, 487-2282.   • Faculty and Tutor Appreciation Day awards: Holman Learning Center is now accepting nominations for the 2007-2008 Faculty and Tutor Appreciation Day, scheduled March 31. The deadline for nominations is noon, Friday, March 14. This program will recognize and reward faculty, lecturers, HLC tutors and Supplemental Instruction leaders who have demonstrated outstanding teaching and learning strategies.   • Sit-Down Saturdays: Sit-Down Saturdays provide an opportunity for graduate students and transfer students (new undergraduates are welcome, too) to talk directly to an admissions counselor about admission and enrollment at EMU. The normal application fee will be waived for all students who apply for admission during Sit-Down Saturdays, which are scheduled March 15 and 29, 8:30 a.m. to noon, at the Welcome Center, second floor, EMU Student Center. Four Seasons art exhibit

sculpted by artist Catherine Shinnick at

Jean Noble Parsons Center for the
Study of Art and Science. The work is part
of "The Four Seasons," an exhibit from a
dozen EMU alumni who created work at the
Parsons center. The exhibit runs through
March 20 at University Gallery.

  • The Four Seasons: University Gallery presents "The Four Seasons," an exhibit that showcases the responses of a dozen EMU alumni who traveled to the Jean Noble Parsons Center to experience seasonal changes in an undisturbed natural environment in rural Benzie County, Mich. Paintings, sculptures, ceramics and textiles will be on display. The exhibit runs through March 20. For more information, call Larry Newhouse, 487-0465.
  • Annual Graduate Art Show: The Annual Graduate Art Show features the work of the art department's graduate students and runs through March 28, Ford Gallery. A variety of media and subject matter will be represented. The exhibit coincides with the Graduate Research Fair. For more information, call 487-1268.
  • Walk for the Heart: The American Heart Association sponsors a Heart Walk to raise awareness and funds for heart disease and stroke, Saturday, May 3, Washtenaw Community College.
